It's been a few weeks and quite a few miles but my thoughts now, bearing in mind that I was a bit disappointed to start with:
I now think it was worth the £260.
The manual gear changes in Sports+ and DSC Off are very quick, it does have the sound of a DSG from outside.
The hard shifts are still there in Sport and Sport+ but can be switched off in Sport if you want.
You can select 'start in 2nd' for both either S or D which is good.
An additional feature just added is having 4 preset shift point settings for S and D modes as well as 3 custom ones for both modes so you can set it up to suit your style of driving. I like that a lot!
Ill try and post some pictures of the options available.
What you have to realise is that the DEC switch does not put the 'box into S mode. So Sport+ with the stick to the right leaves the shift points as they were in comfort, but with traction engaged and Sport+ throttle curve. You do get faster shifts as you go up the driving modes.
Only putting the stick to the left gives S shift points. So you have to rethink the way you set up the car. So for me DSC Off + full manual is a riot! Best engine, fast changes and good throttle pedal map.
I'd say, for the money, get it and give yourself time to play around with all the combinations and settings.
There you go, but just my opinion obviously.

The hard shifts arent there in sports mode at all, i have an email from xhp stating they dont do hard shifts in sports mode, only traction/sports plus/dsc off.

There is that setting to have soft shifts in sport but they are already soft without that setting enabled.

Someone on the forum kindly sent me a MHD Dongle so I went to do this even although I was in 2 minds about it.

MHD wouldn't connect at all. I was trying the password on the back of the dongle. I took that as fate so I've decided not to do XHP.

My thoughts -

- Someone said about making it more jerky in comfort rather than smooth. I don't want that.
- I'd like to see the gear the car is in when in D but is this worth the cost. No.
- I do like using Sport and manual. 140ifan has said this is messed up.
- Sport+ and Traction change fast enough for me just now. I don't need them to change any faster.
- Torque limiters this sounds good but I've never thought oh this car feels so slow it's obviously being restricted. Quite the opposite infact. And the jury is out whether this is a good thing for the gearbox or not.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the gearbox as is so I figured I had more to lose than gain by doing XHP. :-|

It seems like one or 2 peoples bad experiences have put you off something that 99% of people rate highly.

If I was to get another ZF8 equipped car, XHP would be top of my list.

Maybe join the XHP facebook group to solve issues??

So the connection to the car didn't initially work and now you've convinced you don't want it? Is that how I read it?
You do your thing but XHP is nothing but an improvement.

Obviously I can only comment on my own experience but I certainly haven't had any jerkiness in comfort.
Sport and manual is great as far as I'm concerned but I think that 140ifan was not getting the hard gear change in this mode which is what he liked. Personally this is something I'd rather not have (I disabled it right from the start although it was never actually an option to have it, it turns out) but everyone is different.
The ability to set different shift points for both D & S is a real plus point for me.
If you are sitting on the fence then I'd say save your money. You are absolutely right, the ZF 8 speed is a great 'box in standard form. Spend the money on a full service kit instead and it will be a great 'box for years to come!

Ive done plenty of mods on the car, this is the only one ive got an issue with, i dont look for things to complain about if they are not there 👍

Do me a favour, put yours in sport or comfort mode and in manual and tell me honestly there isent a big delay in changing gears.

Im confused, I have done 30k miles on my m140i and had XHP on for the last 2k miles, the shifts are MUCH faster now than before, how can you say they are slow lol? You either had something wrong with uploading it or a separate issue if so

XHP has offered nothing but improvements, with respect to another comment about jerkyness , you might get a slight "jerk" effect on stage 3 when shifting from 2 to 1 in slow traffic, but its fine for most and you can reduce that with other maps or options.

I would never ever go back to standard gearbox map now after having XHP, it is more aligned to my old golf DSG now which is a good thing

Comfort/sports mode, change a gear manually in either of these modes and its so delayed. Sports mode even on full throttle never gives much of a thump when changing gears either.

I think you must have a different XHP to me then, mine does literally the opposite to what you describe above? the thump in sports plus is extremely noticeable, are you using stage 3?

If I do what you mention above, im literally typing this in my car pulled over then the gear change is instant, literally DSG fast, I only ever drive in traction/sport plus manual mode too

Sports mode NOT sports plus.

Sports plus/traction is fine.

Ahhh right, sorry I dont use them modes, never seen the point of them personally so issue doesnt affect me

For anyone using sports plus or traction mode its absolutely fine

I've XHP stage 2 and wouldn't be without it I've none of the negative issues mentioned. Kyle at defined tuning installed mine and would highly recommend him .

Yes i agree its fine in them modes.

I did experience something rather odd the other day for the first time...I was in sport mode (thought I had pressed up twice to enter sports +) and I floored it...The car just roared and barely went anywhere, held onto the revs without shifting up and giving me that whiplash I am used to.

Quite concerning actually, I will try it out again at the weekend when I have more time to go for a play, but usually when I am in Sports+ the thing moves like a scolded cat, and the shifts kick like a mule!

Yikes! That's concerning…

This is exactly what I was disappointed with. The manual gear changes are slower than stock in comfort and sport.
I've kind of got used to it now and put up with it for the sake of the other bits I like.
As a result I drive in DSC Off + Manual a lot more and my average fuel consumption has increased noticeably!
