Winter Tyre Problems

Evening all,

Sorry for another annoying winter tyre thread.

I've just ordered 4 x 225/40/18 Goodyear Ultragrips to go on my stock M140i wheels.

Local garage they were sent to through black circles say the rear tyres were too narrow for the alloy and have refused to fit them citing safety reasons and they need to be bang on the 245 width otherwise they won't touch them.

Do I send them back for a refund? Buy some steel wheels / alloys? Take to a different (better) garage that will fit? I've seen some have gone for 235/40/18 on the rears but they still won't fit them either.

Cheers in advance.

What are the style and offsets of your stock wheels?

Bunch of twats.

Pretty sure yours will be 8 or possibly 8.5, in which case 8.5 is the minimum a 225 can be fitted and an 8 is plenty of room for a 225.

I'd take the tyres somewhere else.

Cheers for the reply all..

From a brief look it seems the fronts are 7.5 and the rears 8... so 225 should be more than adequate all the way round. (Benefits of 235 aside)...

Twats.

I'll get a refund from black circles as I've paid for fitting through them so would be annoying to cough up again for fitting at a different garage.

I think it even says '225/40 R18 92V M+S XL' on the B Pillar plaque?
It does, but if their own complete wheel/tyre sets are anything to go by this is on the assumption that you'll have 18x7.5 all round. I think all the combinations listed on the plaque are ones available as complete sets from BMW.

Regardless of that, 225s are of course fine on the 8s.

How annoying!
Somebody has this problem every year :lol2:

Ignorant tyre monkies strike again :(

I bet if you'd have hung about, they'd have fitted 225 on an 8" rim several times that day. It's actually the best size for that wheel width :lol2:

245 on an 8" is arguably over tyred and could be less direct. Good rim protection though.

I'm sure Black Circles will refund the fitting part though.

Ha ha..

We did spend some time on the computer in their office searching on here trying to find the damn thread that said it was BMW standard to put on 4 x 225/40 but I couldn't find it! (Naturally when I got home I found it straight away)

I think you should all take the compliment that the guy was going to take your advice rather than that listed on the B pillar :lol2:

He did recommend getting 7.5J steel wheels and he'd be happy to fit them to those and then onto the car. Groan.

I have the stock m235i wheels with 225/40/18 all round - that is BMWs recommended setup, and that width is perfectly acceptable on the stock wheels. In fact, the 245 width they fit on the rear is as wide as you are allowed on the stock rears I believe.

Think you need to find a proper tyre place!

While 225/40/18 is the recommended square set up, they are on 7.5" wide alloys (as per my 388's)...

18" 388 36.11.2.448.001 come with Conti TS830P SSR (R/FLAT) with RDCI

I'm having the same problem, trying to get a garage to fit 225/40R18 Michelin CrossClimate CC+ tyres to the stock alloys (7.5" front and 8.0" rear) is like pulling teeth.

If anyone could recommend a decent tyre garage in the WF/LS postcodes I would be grateful!
