Swirl flap issue - 15 plate 116D ED Plus

Hi,

I bought a used 116d ED Plus on a 15 plate two weeks ago. Everything has felt fine however it has at times felt a bit flat/sluggish. For example if on a motorway with cruise control locked to 70 it would struggle to maintain speed when going uphill. Today a friend of mine also felt the engine was rattling when parked up earlier today.

I visited a local performance specialist to get this remapped (was planning on doing this anyway) and they have said when they have done their initial pre-map diagnostics it has gone into limp mode. On the Bosch diagnostics it has come up with fault code 2C3200 - Swirl flap - mechanical fault. The comments state oil residue around swirl flap motor, car in limp mode, no EML shown and car needs inlet stripdown and advise on repair. They have also said the rod that goes through the swirl flaps has come lose from the motor (I believe its held in with two screws). They have said the car was sluggish as it was only producing 70bhp when its rated at 116. They have managed to get it up to 90bhp using their base map but I need to get the swirl flap issue sorted before they can get the map tuned. They have quote ÂŁ175 inc vat to do a swirl flap delete.

I do have warranty on the car however I am expecting to get the run around from them as they have said if there's no EML showing then there won't be much they can do without a diagnostic report. I have since got this from the performance specialist and sent them this over so waiting for their response.

Just looking for some advice on what I should do? I'm tempted to go down the swirl flap delete route then this is no longer an issue for the future (I expect if the dealer does something it will just be a basic repair rather than remove the flaps). I've also done a bit research and I also understand that the swirl flap issue shouldn't be present on my 1 series as BMW corrected the issue so I'm further confused on what I should be doing.

Hi I have a 2010 lci 123d. I recently removed my inlet manifold to inspect the swirl flaps. They were clean enough but the brass spindle had worn away bearing surface that they spin in. There was about 5mm play. So although they were working they were causing a loud vibration noise thru the plastic manifold.
The brass rod which is square was also worn down quite a bit by the 4th cylinder. A few more miles it would have broke sending parts into the engine and turbo!
I removed the rod and flaps. Fitted the cone shaped bung (eBay)
Car was quieter and just as quick if not quicker.
No flat spots as some people say may happen.
Get those pesky swirl flaps out of there and have peace of mind 🙂
PS Swirl flaps cannot be repaired other than putting a brand new manifold which comes with the swirl flap system built inside it.

Hi! I was just wondering if anybody might be able to help, I'm having similar issues (Huge loss in power, sort of feels as though the turbo isn't working properly) I've had it scanned by a friend and the cars thrown up a 2c3200 error code. Now after calling around a little bit about getting the swirl flaps blanked or deleted I'm being told that it would be a whole new manifold job and that they can't be removed in my vehicle. I was wondering if anybody can clear this up for me 🙂

Can't help on whether they can be removed or not (pretty sure they can). But when I bought my B37 116d it went into BMW to have some tests and this swirl flap error came up. The remedy was apparently a manifold clean, but I opted not. A few motorway runs holding the revs at about 3500 for 20 mins or so and a can of Cataclean and though it's been in for its health check recently the error hasn't recurred.

Hi. Do you have any update? I just have the same issue... I'm being told that need a new manifold and a new oxigen sensor.

hi people, ive been having the same issue with my swirl flaps on a 2015 BMw 116d msport. i took it to halfords and initially they had a mass airflow sensor code come up which they resolved but approx 2 weeks later i had the same issue with the vehicle. car was sluggish and just like JRB has mentioned above it struggles uphill too.
warranty obviously avoided this as wear and tear so i wouldn't recommend that step for anyone as you will get charged around ÂŁ120 labour sadly. Now i know the best thing to do is get the swirl flaps removed/deleted can anyone recommended or know where i should get the kit from and how to confirm i know its the correct kit because i cannot find anything for a B37 engine.

I have a loss of power too and seeing a swirl flap error code. The weird thing is that when I turn the car off and turn it back on, it will be back to normal for a bit and then lose power again randomly or if I go above gear 3.... any ideas?
hi, im experiencing this exact issue and have been for a while, stumped across this thread - did you manage to sort out your issue and if so how?

kind regards

hi there owner of a bmw 116d ED plus 2015, my manifold has fully gone for the 2nd time now the first time the manifold motor went which was repaired however I got a power lose 1 week go and got it plugged into a reader and it came up with O2 sensor and swirl flap, manifold error, mechanic had a quick check and said the manifold has completely gone and the reason why I had power sometimes is because the motor was still working trying to open and close the swirl flaps. I've been trying to find a manifold for my specific manual engine and I cannot find one so I do not know what. quick fix is because apparently manifolds are on backlog at bmw and its also very expensive and I've done 1 repair on the manifold already.

Hi i have a bmw 1 series msport 116d f20 and should have 114hp but have been experiencing same issues. The car can not accelerate above 100mph and can not maintain cruise control speed in gear 6. Taking off in gear 1 has a massive flat spot where the revs just drop. I recently got the car stage 1 remapped and no power increase where as it should have taken it to 155bph. I was advised by the tuning centre to remove my inlet manifold flaps and would cost me ÂŁ250.

Just wanted to ask where you had yours removed from and is there any power loss under 2000rpm. Or any other issues

Has anybody recently had this issue resolved? BMW garage telling me to have intake manifold replaced which is apparently permanent fix or performance garages telling me to have the swirl flaps removed and code deleted again telling me it’s a permanent fix . If anybody could let me know how they have resolved, would massively appreciate any feedback

Hi there.
Just seen this and its interesting. We have just bought the same car for my daughter. I feel its a bit sluggish as you say. BMW has said as an advisory to get the Swirl Flaps checked as theres a stored fault code. The car went to Manchester and back last weekend no problem and turned about 70 mpg so I'm thinking there can't be that much wrong??
I'll get BMW to look at it but did you resolve the problem, what have you done since??
Cheers
