A boring subject potentially but just completed around 1200 miles in my M140i and did a 310 mile round trip from Dunfermline to Dingwall and got 40.2 mpg. I was driving like a very old person just to break it on the last leg!!.

A9 full of average speed cameras so was not too much hard work but 58 mph for last 20 miles on the motorway to hit it [emoji23][emoji85]. Let's say everything passed me.

A challenge done and not to be repeated....

I am one of those old fashioned ones and wanted to get to 1000 miles before taking the car to the upper revs over 4K. Now the fun begins.

Anyone beat 40mpg?

Yes.

There's a long thread on this in the forum. I've seen 47.2mpg on my work commute in my M140i. In fact as long as there's no major delays getting onto the motorway I rarely achieve less than 40mpg!
Did not spot the other thread sir. Geez you must do well as I average 28-29 but lots of short commutes

no need to split a thread ;)

My commute on M27 is so congested it's genuinely quicker to stick to the inside lane at 60 than it is to hammer down the outside 2 inches behind the car in front where the merest tap of the brakes on the 1st car means the 10th car comes to a standstill! Never understand that mentality and yet most down this way seem to drive that way!

Anywho, once your engines bedded in a bit more you'll see your economy improve further. First few thousand in mine averaged 32mpg then after a year and a trip reset it was hanging around 34 as an average!

I just got my m140 shadow and on the first run out easily achieved around 36mpg. On my daily commute (only 11miles) I'm getting about 29mpg. I'm moving back from NI to the mainland and will be commuting on the M1, hopefully I can achieve 40mpg!

To be honest I was expecting the BMW to be far worse on fuel than the Mk7 GTi it replaced, but it's not so bad. It's not even run in and it's almost on a par!

To be honest no, through the middle of the Scottish highlands so pretty decent actually but for sure did not enjoy any speed [emoji23]

Yep, think my best is 52 or something. I'll post a pic up when I get to work :)

Whats the point in driving fast everywhere? You'll lose your license and then not be able to drive at all...

The ZF auto when in top gear just cruising can achive great mpg on a light throttle as the engine revs at less than 2k when cruising at 70 mph and closer to above idle at 50ish mph..

Unforunately as soon as you use the lower gears e.g. in normal stop start or in traffic the 3 litre more then shows it's true hand and that's before you drive spirited... Still for an engine capacity of this size it's still mighty impressive

Well then what is the point of having a fast car? So you can drive smoothly to tescos and back? I would estimate that the majority of users on here are at risk of losing their licence >2 times a week.

I am pretty much in the middle of these two trains of thought. I don't baby the car because I don't see the point, fuel economy doesn't factor in to my driving style. On the other hand I don't ever speed as I wouldn't want to lose my license.

I am in that middle road where I like to put my foot down up to the speed limit and then cruise. Maybe on an overtake I might go faster than usual but still well away from triple digits.

I think these type of threads have merit.

I do 20k miles per year and coming from a 330d touring, real world MPG was a factor in my decision to purchase and I looked on here for confirmation of the same.

I limit blasts to cross country A/B roads and use the power to overtake safely but nanny it at 70 on cruise when on the motorway. I simply couldn't afford to blat everywhere in sport.

I'm getting around low 30's avg per tank which i can live with and know that i can get around 42 on a motorway run which is only 6 less than my 330d.

Happy days!

Same for me - I came from a petrol A5 that could easily achieve 40mpg on my 30 miles commute (60 round trip)

It was a nice surprise when during the run in period with the M140i (Auto) I realised that 40+ mpg was achievable!

Of course, now I'm getting more like 30-35mpg but having much more fun!! :D

When you're doing more mileage it's nice to know that the car is capable of being fairly efficient!

I seem to get the same figures for each different type of journey year round:

Around town, stuck in traffic, the odd blast when it's warmed up, no motorway, 5-10miles ish - 22-23mpg.

Chilled out, around town, no blasts, bit of motorway/Dual, 10-15 miles - 27mpg

Longer journey, 60-70 miles, A/B roads not much motorway, family in, the odd full throttle blast and overtake, chilling out coming home - 33-35mpg

Long boring motorway journey, driving from Lancs to London twice a year, still the odd blast out of services, small challenges from sales reps etc ;) - 39-42mpg

Hyper miling - 45mpg+

Full hooning round the country road/NSL roads - 16-18mpg. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I take my car out for a play regularly. But on a 60 mile motorway commute, there's not point me rushing etc. So I stick it in Eco pro, a cruise quite happily at 70. A lot of my drive is downhill, hence the 50+ reading

Yesterday I hit smashed the 40mpg barrier for the first time. My mum was passenger so I took the opportunity to chill in eco-mode with cruise control while chatting to her.

Last week I averaged 36mpg when I averaged a speed between 69-80mph.

This excellent fuel consumption underscores that it's a car for the long term that doesn't need to be sold if I get a job that requires me to commute in it.

That's pretty good going.

I've not reset mine since collecting it and it's hovering around 30.7mpg since June last year. That includes some longer motorway drives, my commute three times a week and enjoying the car. Pretty happy with that...my old 325 averaged 31.7 over three years and that only had 197bhp.

Best of both worlds with the M140,. I can easily use man maths to justify having thus over a company car. A few long journeys and the average soon goes up. My best so far was 42 mpg over 300 miles but I wasn't driving like miss daisy,. Tend to set cruise at 77 where traffic allows these days though due to traffic cameras.

Some pretty impressive figures in this thread! Glad I wasn't the only one looking at real life MPG when doing my research :lol2: . I use mine for work and roughly do circa 1,300 - 1,700 miles a month which is a mix between motorway miles and in and around town. Monday - Friday it's constantly in Eco Mode and then Saturday & Sunday it ranges between Comfort / Sport!

I reset my trip at the start of every month and the best I've had is 40.1mpg - worst I've had is 28mpg (a lot of fun was had this month :D ). January managed 34mpg across 1,400 miles of mainly in town driving with a blast to Derby and back from London at the end of the month.

Of those that are getting the higher numbers - do you find cruise control makes a big difference? Mine didn't come with Cruise control and I've been thinking about adding it on but for the time being I use the speed limiter as a make shift cruise control (dont judge me :lol2: )

I've been saying diesel cars are obsolete for some time. Sub 5sec to sixty and 47mpg.

Sounds amazing....
I just got my M140i a week ago, I have not seen more then 20 MPG honest to god , I dont drive it hard....
It's most of the time in Comfort mode.

Home to work is approx 9 miles including dual carriage so total 18 miles a day, How am i not getting this kind of MPG..
Assuming you're in the UK. The engines probably not long up to temperature over 9miles in winter. Is that your average on the dashboard or what the trip computer is saying in the idrive for that journey assuming it's set to reset?
