M140 turned into a 335d. How?!

Dear gang.....after being an avid reader and member of this fine forum for the past year or so and going through all the colour, spec and financial puzzles in my head with you all.....I arrived at my local dealer the other day to test drive a 140 following an earlier drive last year in a 135.....happy bunny both times! The dealer then offered just for comparison, and knowing I have a second child on the way to test the 335d.....so I did. What's the harm?
Well....it was a whisker nearly as fast, but more planted and mature with more space and made the 140 feel like a bit of a reckless yob. Am I getting old or is it actually a fine and worthy package I'm the presence of the mighty 140?
Today....deposit down.....but on a new 335d. Is this a mistake and is the following deal a sound one? The dealer swore that I'd taken his eyes out!

Really nervous all of a sudden.....opinions welcomed before Wednesday when I finally sign.....just put mini deposit to score of ÂŁ500 today.

The BMW finance contributions are ÂŁ5k and you should be looking at ÂŁ11k off the list price. BMW really want to shift diesel models as they have an over supply against reduced demand.

If you like it go for it, but it always seems strange to me that someone in the market for a 3.0 petrol hatch suddenly decides that they prefer a 3.0 diesel saloon. Do you want a diesel saloon, or is it just that deal that appeals?

I'm personally done with diesels engines so would never go that way even if my annual mileage was high.

This is actually really interesting as I have ordered an M140 and my wife's step father (step father in law?) has just this week purchased a second hand 335d. We went out in both and I thought the M140 was miles away from the 335d, the noise and the drama and specialness (not a word) is worlds apart from the 335d.

He does lots of miles, I do very little. I think if he did fewer miles he would have much preferred the M140. He didn't even like BMW until he heard the M140s exhaust.

PersonAlly I would only consider the 335 if I absolutely had to have the high economy as no other brand offers performance like the 335d for the same price. Not that I found anyway.

335d is a great car and loaded with MP parts it will look great. It might be as quick as a 140i but it will lack and drama and noise from the exhaust which for me is part of the fun! What about a 340i? Prob won't get anywhere near the discount on it!

If the straight six appeals and you need the extra space then there are good discounts available on the 340i touring which is a fantastic car. Only you can decide of course but for me I wouldn't bother with diesel, as good as the 335d is, I'd opt for the petrol variant every time.

I has a 335d, couldn't wait to get another petrol car, only had it about 3 months, I much prefer the 340i which is actually fairly economical and doesn't need the springs changing to get a decent ride, if you do a lot of miles then the 335d is a good thing to have, but I just never looked forward to driving it and don't do the miles to justify a diesel anyway

I'm on my 3rd F30 330d msport+ and they're great cars indeed(better than 335d in my opinion being RWD) but lacks the excitement(335d lacks even more) fantastic torque pretty good on fuel but I never had the desire to go for just a drive for the sake of it neither made my heart race the way the M140i did when I had a demo for half a day hence I'm awaiting delivery of my little beast.

ÂŁ1500 less in BMW finance contributions compared to a 335d, but still a big wedge off list.

I would not be buying a new diesel and I love the engine in the 335d, I have had a 535d for almost 2yrs now. Amazing engine, great fuel efficiency and has tremendous real world pace. Diesel engines in this country are finished now. I will probably be going the route of a 140i or M2 as my 535d replacement, my other car has 4 doors.

Thanks chaps for all the feedback.....I'm still torn. Buyers remorse I think we know it as. I know it's an awesome car.....but the 140 and 340 may even be a little more.....one slightly cheaper, the other slightly more.
Remember one crucial thing.....even though I karted and raced quite a bit as a youngster, so oversteer is an old friend I'd like to meet again.....but I've been driving a land Rover freelander 2 for six years, so any of these 3 will be mind blowing.
On the downside I've only got 10k free miles a year.....so I ain't gonna be doing big miles.....so won't get benefit of economy.

If you're handing it back at the end of the PCP or VT point there is no risk at all, but probably zero equity to roll into another deal.

If you're doing 10k a year then I can't see the point of a diesel. M140/135 is so much more of an event! My old 335D was a lovely car and while it was nice to drive, you didn't open the windows when there was a tunnel, nor would you go for a blast just because you can.

You might want to rethink that decision, on 10k miles a year, the savings by going Diesel, and AWD Diesel at that (10%+ worse than sDrive ) is not going to make much difference in terms of running costs. F30 335d's seem to average between 35 - 40 mpg in the real world.
Please consider the 40i instead if staying with 3 series.

Also if you're gonna be thrashing the diesel about you're not gonna get anywhere near the stated MPG. So then what do you have? A less dramatic, less cool, just as thirsty, soon to be extinct diesel 3 series.

Do what your heart is telling you. Buy petrol and make sure it has 6 cylinders!

I changed my 330d xDrive SE Touring for an M235i Convertible, and I'm 63.

The 6-cyl turbo diesels are effortless cruisers, and in Comfort mine would spend most of the time in 8th gear on the motorway, even when the hills were pretty steep. For a family, I'd always go for a estate, as the space increase and ability to carry all the gear was useful (this persists even once the kids have left home). Even without a family, the extra load space is often useful. I got 47 MPG average over a year of very mixed driving. Getting out of the car after a long journey, especially on holidays through France, I'd always be fresh. xDrive was great on skiing holidays to the Alps.

I was doing about 20,000 miles/year so spending a lot of time on the motorways, then I switched jobs and found I was on the train much more, or at home. At the same time, the whole diesel controversy erupted and I had reservations about the residual values of another diesel.

The 330d was a terrific workhorse but the M235i is so much more fun, plus a convertible regularly transforms what otherwise would be a mundane journey.

If you don't have kids or they're grown up, then really, all that matters space-wise is accommodating two adults and any associated holiday luggage. The 2 convertible does that fine. And modern convertibles are almost as quiet as the metal-roofed versions. What I really liked about the 2 vs 3, and didn't expect to be so useful, was how much easier to park it is.
