LED headlights vs Icon LED headlights

Hi all, quick question please. If you spec a vanilla M135i with no options they still come with LED headlights. If however you spec the Tech Pack 1, they are replaced with what BMW call ICON LED headlights.

My question is what are the differences in both function and physical looks ?

Is it just that the standard ones don't have any adaptive features (i.e. swivelling the beam when going round bends) but the ICON ones do ?

Also, on the 3 series, the standard headlights only use the outer light assembly for dipped and main beam with the inner light assembly basically being a dummy light and serving no real purpose other than a second DRL. When upgrading to the Laser headlights, the inner light is then also used for both functions. Is it the same on the 1 series, i.e. only the outer light is used, or do the ICON upgrades mean that all 4 headlights are in use ?

You don't get all the adaptive functions but you can activate high beam assistant on the standard LED lights from the BMW Online store once you have the car, as well as parking assistant, wireless charging and WiFi, you also get heads up display with TP1 which is superb.

My car was built march 2020 and in the store it says high beam assist isn't available for me

What model are you driving Wrex? Do you have a camera above the interior mirror? And 2 buttons on the end of the left stalk? I believe they are the only prerequisiteS for HBA to be available!

Do you know roughly what the wireless charging function costs? Was going to spec enhanced bluetooth to get this but if I can be purchased for cheap enough (suspect it won't be) then it might be something to consider, cheers.

I totally disagree with this approach. It's not like paying a licence for satnav updates or real time traffic info where a service is being provided through the car's systems.

Rather this means that when you've bought the car you own all the hardware that it necessary to achieve the function though you need to pay extra to enable it to work, it really does not make sense.

Its the future unfortunately, I read that the new VW ID3 will be built with all possible options and you can turn them on and off as needed via a subscription. There is some argument for not subscribing to heated seats during the summer I suppose.
By pre fitting options to cars the production process becomes much simpler and massive savings can be made on inventory and supply chain costs, ok there are higher component costs but BMW will just screw the prices down at the suppliers based on higher volumes. Subscription retail will be available for the whole life of the car even if the vehicle passes through multiple owners

This is why most car builders are bundling options into packs, the consumer thinks there are making a saving, the real saving goes in BMW pocket as the cars can be assembled faster at lower costs

It's basically coding that cannot be performed by the owner, known as 'software as product' (sWap) VW also now do this, most notably on the mk8 golf, they say it allows future owners to enable functions the original owner didn't spec, in reality its just a money spinner for the manufacturers.

Do you know if the paid to enable features bind to account or car? I'm going to guess account (no resale value), being a business and all!

Can't wait for the BMW accounts being sold on ebay with features.

Edit: Answering myself...

It also means that potentially dealers would be able to reset cars to a 'factory settings' and then charge for extras depending on a customer's preference. While the latter isn't confirmed, the move certainly gives the brand that functionality.

A spokesman for BMW UK said: 'We do not foresee features being disabled at a later date.'

Once enabled the feature becomes part of the car as it is done through the infotainment system, other than a couple of infotainment software related things, I'm pretty sure only HBA is buyable this way on the F40.

Enhanced Bluetooth with wireless charging is the only option available and is £350.

I suppose in a way it's a good way of potentially beating the £40k luxury car tax bracket. Spec the car to just below £40k, then add in the options you want as and when you need them or can afford them ?

It makes for an interesting future going forward. Reminds me of the Tesla that had a $5000 [full self driving] feature wiped just after the second owner bought it.

Eventually, you'll be buying a fully spec'd out car and only getting half the features turned on.

All the available options are activated already free of charge for the first three years in the M135i (except HBA if you didn't spec adaptive lights).

So in essence it's best to just spec it initially :lol2: :lol2:

Yea on the stalk there is a button your press and the it comes up on the main screen from what I remember. The lights also have to be on for it to be activated

Just to add to this as my 128ti was delivered today, I didn't spec the adaptive headlights but I have two buttons on the stalk, BC and A. If I press A, I can purchase high beam assistant on the store. My car was built April 2021.

That's great, but it's not 'Adaptive headlights'
