And IHKA3 module... sorry this means nothing to me?! Is this the model of panel I need?

 

Coding is tweaking the parameters of the software in your car - in this case it would be to make the climate control panel work. As for the IHKA3 module, I believe that was part of the date related comment.

If your car was manufactured after March 2014, you will have the IHKA3 module and will therefore be able to do what you want.

I'm thinking of doing this. I have a pre-LCI m135i and after seeing my wife's X3 with the gloss black, kind of want it in mine now

 

I've just done it on my F30, looks soooooo much better!

 

Did you need any special tools / trim removers? Is it just a T20 torx from what I've seen online? Any need to code anything afterwards?

No special tools no, T20 torx, no coding.

Not sure if F20 has the ambient light round the edge, if it does then you need to make up a cable to tap into the light over the ashtray.....
