LCI Auto whistling / whining noise in 2nd gear acceleration

I hear a whistling / whining noise in 2nd gear as the car is accelerating. Not loud but noticeable. Does not happen in any other gear at any other time. I noticed it as soon as I picked up the car but ignored it. Car has done about 200 miles. My pre-LCI never did that.

Any views? Anyone else getting it with their M135i LCI?

Cheers

I get this also and my car is not LCI. I haven't done anything with it

I also get a slight whine during low speed mild acceleration though I haven't associated it with any particular gear or situation. I just assumed it to be normal but have wondered if it could be the turbo beginning to spool up.

Mines a February '15 built pre LCI.

I've got a late pre-LCI M135i, picked up start of March.

I have exactly the same issue and and have it booked in for the dealers to look at. That and the HK hiss! This forum is excellent, didn't want to post anything but glad to read I'm not alone.

Symptoms are: Manual or Auto mode, when in 2nd you hear this gearbox/turbo noise. In manual mode you can just hold the throttle there and it remains. It's sounds a bit like a cross of a supercharger or my old CTR had a noise from the cam chain. The high pitch whine stops about 2krpm. Slowly goes away as you go higher, say 3k. In 1st and 3rd you can just about hear something.....very very quiet.

I've noticed something else too.... It's happened a few times where i'm doing about 20mph (or once 60mph), auto mode, and I notice the car is producing a very loud high pitched noise. It's sooo high pittched that it's at the top of my hearing range (sort of feel it rather than hear it initially). I mute the radio and then realise it's there. If I accelerate (to spool turbos) it remains and stays constant. Last time it got slightly quieter after about 30 seconds, I hit a bump and it immediately stopped. It has only happened when below 2k revs for a couple of mins. Related to HK hiss or 2nd gear whine?!

Thanks EB135 and Crafty,

I'm going to monitor it for a bit. I can't bare the thought of going back to the dealer and some techie telling me it's fine etc. I'm wishfully thinking I'll go away soon like Nick Clegg.

Cheers

I've been told my combined issues will take 2 days to diagnose. Will report back in due course. Assume no fault found :p . Knew I shouldn't have said it sounded like the turbo! My first two issues (HK + 2nd gr) are probably nothing serious, the final paragraph I'm a bit more concerned about :-(

Typo! I'm not going away! I meant to type "it'll" instead of "I'll". Bloody iPhone autocorrect again!

Everything is cool :)

The way to check is put it in manual and accelerate to 2k rpm. Keep it there and listen. Probably on a warm engine. Does that sound about right Paul?

I just posted up in the uk meeting section about a South (ish) meet, if either of you two are this way maybe we can meet up and compare ?
I would've been up for that but am in the west!

EB135, thanks, I will try that and report back.

I have a great love of Scotland but live in London so, regretfully, won't be able to make the meet. Shame.

I've heard a noise which I can only describe as what sounds like a very very distant police siren. Only ever at low speeds and with radio turned very low. It's more noticeable with the passenger window down. I just assumed it was the turbo to be honest.

Does that sound like yours Paul?

Jez O,

Just finished replacing all the drive train on my sons mountain bike (snapped gear hanger, everything), now clearing up and then I'm going for a drive. I'll see if I can place the iPhone near the centre of the car and see if I can record the sound.

Be back soon.

I've heard that distant siren sound. Perhaps it's normal?

I'm pretty sure you can just about hear the wastegate too, under the right conditions.
