quick one as you know the n47 engine on 08 plate has a diff design to the common swirl flap issues, well on these its a long metal rod with a flap on each cylinder now the rod sits in clips in four places down the manifold alsmost like bearings. Now cylinders 1-2 are tight were the clips are which hold the rod now the last clip for cylinder 4 actually moves on the manifold it self with about 2-3mm movement up and down causing the flap to have movement. Where the rod end finishes it sits in the end of the manifold but not tight its alsmost worn a big hloe where it now dosnt sit tight is this normal lol!Has any one seen this in pearson on there own manifold? I have read a post on here already which the chap describes it as putting a ruler in a vise the vise end is tight but the other end has movement in it.If that makes sense to you guys
Cheers.

I don't know whether it is normal or not and I have not checked mine (I am too scared about what I would find). However, the following vids might be useful - or just end up giving you nightmares!! If you find a solution, please let us know. AFAIK nobody has a blanking solution that you can buy for the N47 engine.

i think if you were in need of one it would be a complete new manifold! if you remove the actuater you can pull the long shaft out and the flaps, I wounder if you could remove them and blank the small hole where the rod slins into the manifold?
Goimg ring bmw today to see if i can get any parts separte will let you know at lunch.
sorry about the rushed reply late for work lol

I suggest you speak to PMW ltd, as far as I know there were two sizes of swirl flaps the original small design and the larger modern design. I think the newer diesels no longer have them, maybe BMW decided later it was a bad design? My E60 525d used to have the later big design even though it was an 04 plate, I fitted blanking plates to mine for piece of mind and never really had any problems. It is still early days on the larger design to hear about failure but I am sure I have heard of some.

Looking at realoem looks like its not the same larger flap design or it just looks different, best speaking to PMW to find out.

Personally if I had them then I would either replace the inlet manifold or fit blanking plates, especially if out of warranty and BMW wont cover it.

Reminds why i give my car intake cleaner every 10,000km
How do you use this intake cleaner? Do you have a link?
The intake cleaner is just to remove the gunk. It just burns and is not dangerous to the engine. It's only a good thing to do on a car with EGR.

I use a product called "Bell Add" in Denmark.... it's very good!

Something like this - > " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1. drive engine warm
2. let engine idle while you remove intake hose AFTER MAF/MAP sensor
3. keep rpm at 2000 while you(someone) spray the can in to the air duct.
3. when can is empty, let engine idle while your assemble hose.
4. go for a spirited drive to clean out deposits.

I saw a couple of diesel engine inlet manifolds that has gotten this treatment every 20.000km, they looked very fine.

Thank you.

I'm too much of a coward to do that! I don't think I fancy all the crap going through the engine/turbo.

But it would be much quicker than stripping and cleaning manually.
Really no worry...

The gunk is being "transformed" in to a powder like substance, that doesnt cause harm to any parts.
I've seen this used for a lot of years, not ever heard of any probs.

Cant get parts just a new manifod its only ÂŁ400 odd ! Going in the morning look at a new one to compare the two next to each other for play.
This car is getting on my nerves only had it two weeks and its cost me ÂŁ1200 already going get this manifold sorted and maybe get rid good car but cant afford for more things go wrong!

Yeah... The N47 is a lemon. Too many weird things going on.
Kind of strange, since the M47 was bullet proof.
