How to make a Diesel engine quieter?

As titled.. My car just sounds like a bag of bolts nowadays.. The cold weather and cold start ups aren't helping

My back box being removed probably didn't support this cause either loool

I do yearly oil changes using MOBIL ESP 5w30.. Next change will be July 2016

I always reload on Shell V power diesel

I don't do a lot of mileage..

Silly to try make a diesel quieter but do I have any options lads?

If you didn't already know.. It's a M47 118d

Can anyone recommend an additive that actually works?

Should I change what oil I use or fuel?

Any other suggestions welcome..

Thanks in advance..

Nothing you can do. BMW make some of the quietest too.

I don't have it but always wonder if under bonnet insulation makes a difference. :?
The engine cover helps a little (removes injector tick to some extent), but the section attached to the bonnet makes very little difference.

Try changing your glow plugs, they stay on until the coolant warms up (70C ? - don't quote me on that!) so help things for longer than people realise.

I probably do have a fault code stored for the glow plugs.. Hasn't affected the drive though.. Will consider this.

Loool I already got a rude boy system.. Jk it's not really that rude.. Just some logic 7 speakers and tweeters.

I don't actually hear the noise much from inside the car.

Loool it's from the outside.. My parents think my car is broken [emoji23] it's embarrassing explaining its a diesel to them..

run a thicker LLL04 spec oil (5w40) is what I use on my N47 which isn't quiet at all!, helps a little....just noticed its got no DPF, so can probably run oil even thicker than this, non LL04 spec...I may be wrong...

I find my 120d quieter with 0w30 weight oil...

Mines not too bad but maybe the piezo injectors in the 120d are a bit quieter than on a 118d

What is your mileage? noises can be caused by a few things on M47 as I've covered 250k miles in mine have a good idea of what causes most of them! lol!

Tensioner bearing is normally first to go many mistake it for alternator bearing these do not fail I had 176k miles out of it and was still perfect working order replaced it as I had a newer one with new engine I stuck in after old one decided to ingest its own engine oil through the turbo. PS pump also was totally fine and had no issues. The crank pulley has a special damper in it these do go on occasion although mine has been fine as well with high miles but neighbours 320d went at 100k miles and my god fathers Rover 75 went around same miles too, luckily have couple spare but they are PIA to get off!

The other culprit is the other bearing on the other plastic pulley this normally goes after the tensioner but I replace both at the same time as TBH they aren't expensive and Eurocarparts does deals at weekends with 10-15% off from time to time, the tensioner is more expensive they are also identical to BMW parts but 1/3 of the cost. Normally when the belts start to look tired I change the belts and the plastic pulley's. Also the other thing that tends to make a bit of racket and causes loss of coolant slowly then very dramatically is the water pump they tend to last to about 100k-120k miles depending on how hard you've driven the car if you purely do motorway miles and stick to 60mph then it may last a lot longer but I don't know anyone here that drives like that!! For some reason all BMW water pumps seem to let go at around this mileage I replaced mine with another make that was much cheaper and looks to be better made metal pulley no plastic.
