bmw 123d 2011 e82.

this is what opie said to me

Hi Martin

With Castrol, I would use the Syntrans B 75w in the gearbox and Syntrax Longlife 75w-90 for the diff.

With Red Line, I would use a 50/50 mix of their MTL and D4 ATF in the gearbox (the MTL is a little thick, the D4 is a little thin) and the 75w-90 GL5 in the diff.

The gearbox takes 1.6L and 1.2L for the diff.

Regards

Tim

Redline is good to start with but breaks down quickly.
Just stay with the BMW OEM oils.
I learnt the hard way.
How did you learn the hard way if you don't mind me asking bud?

I usually buy my oils from eBay, Syntrans B 75w is about ÂŁ12 on there.
Marco do you agree with guy above saying get castrol instead redline as I have seen you recommend redline on past posts among the web?

Mine will be getting Redline shortly, but others prefer the Castrol.

Okay so would you agree with the guy that says "I would use a 50/50 mix of their MTL and D4 ATF in the gearbox (the MTL is a little thick, the D4 is a little thin) and the 75w-90 GL5 in the diff."

Or would you just use one or the other?

Sounds good to me, I'm going with a litre of MTL, then topping off with D4.
So 1 litre of MTL and the 0.6litres of D4? is there a reason for that instead of just 50/50 like the guy from opie said?

I just happen to like MTL, smooths out clunky changes a little, in my experience. Each to their own though. :)
So with mine being a 123d should I go for 50/50 of MTL and D4 basically half and hlaf like the guy said or 1 litre of MTL and 0.6 litres of D4 like you and your 135i?

There's not going to be any perceptible difference between a 50/50 blend and a 60/40 blend. As long as you use appropriate oil from a decent brand, it will be fine. Most of the benefit comes from having "fresh oil". If you don't have a strong personal preference for one or another, just stick with BMW's recommended Castrol Syntrans B 75W. It's a very good oil.
