100% goes back to front, it is deffinetly an m47 engine, I've compared it to other images online and it looks identical to them. I also have done filters and such on it so I am confident in saying it is the og engine. Taking this on I would think it would be rear wheel drive but the guy who sold it to me seemed convinced it wasn't.

Good news yous were right, it is rear wheel drive and I've spotted the reluctor rings aswell, don't know what the guy who sold it to me was on about, probably should have checked before coming on here, oh well live and learn.
Than you for your help, hopefully I can get them replaced without to much hassle.

Haynes manual says not to re-use the bolts, they are cheap and go for less than £2 a bolt, can be ordered directly from BMW, double check the OEM no. And put that into their online parts store. I ordered mine and am just waiting for a day off work to do mine too

Method is on page one. Wind the nut off only 3mm, whack the socket, not the end of the thread. Soak everything with Plus Gas if necessary.

My Bmw 1 series ,2.0 litre , petrol hatchback - Dynamic stabilty control warning light came on - local garage diagnosed steering angle sensor switch pack fault - warning light not on at the moment but no doubt will come on again - to fix part cost alone quoted as about £400 . Car is 09 reg but has only done around 16,000 miles. I read that if some parts fail prematurely BMW offer 'goodwill' compensation - does this look like it might qualify ? Also part price on internet seems to vary widely from what I can see ?! Anybody familiar with this problem ?
ps have read that dynamic stabilty control unit failing prematurely on 1 series was common, but garage says it is not this part but the electronic switch pack behind the steering wheel !

Hello all, I have this problem with my car and caused an Mot failure last week.

I have followed the videos on YouTube for removing the shaft and ring replacement.

At the moment the near side rear has had both ring and sensor changed. I am waiting for another ABS sensor to be delivered tomorrow before starting the passenger rear. For now though I have used 2 washers underneath the passenger rear ABS as I've seen this as a temp fix but I've just gone up and down the street with the lights still on.

Anyone know what this could be?
Possibly too much space with the washers?
Incorrect fitting of the rear near side?
I was half hoping the washer fix would help me out to get through the Mot and then do the fix after

Thanks for any help.

You'll need to read the codes to see where it says the problem is. One washer is the normal fix, so 2 might be too much.

Did you clear the codes after doing the work? I'm not sure the light will go off automatically if it stops seeing a fault

Thanks for your reply, I've done some reading since and seen that 1 is all that's been used on others so that's my next change when I'm home..

I've seen a few videos where the code has cleared automatically but not 100% if this is specific to certain models or anything else.
I haven't cleared the codes as I don't have a code reader which will pick everything up.

I'm not sure if there's any users local to me (Northamptonshire) with one, if not its going to have to be cleared by the garage for a steal

Hi all, I have a 2012 118d coupe M Sport and have this issue, I’ve temporarily had to drive with the DSC off. Does anyone have any recommendations for local garages in Greater Manchester to fix this problem?

Any local friendly BMW specialist will have dealt with hundreds of these, I’d ring around your 3 nearest Indi’s for quotes.

Hello. I am new to this forum that I find quite helpful! I'm from Canada, and drive a Canadian version of the E82, 2011 128i, which is the N52 engine, 6 speed manual, coupé version. I guess it's equivalent to the European 125i? Not sure.
I'm having a challenging issue with my ABS/DSC system. Bought the car 2 years ago and was having random DSC engagement on the highway, and the lights (ABS/DSC) were illuminating on and off. Codes showed that the left rear sensor was faulty. Replaced it with a new one, was god for a couple of months.
Here is what is happening:
  • Trio ABS lights coming on randomly, sometimes when taking an highway exit, sometimes driving in the city.
  • Sometimes the ABS will go crazy when braking at low speed (Like if I was on ice), without any dash light on.
  • The codes are always the same.
P15C8 - Wheel speed sensor rear/left Circuit open
5DB6 - Wheel direction rear left
5DB1 - wheel speed sensor rear left extrapolation

I inspected the ring on the left side and it looks all good. I traced the wire loom for the sensor near where it enters the vehicle inside the wheel well, and the wiring insulation was chafed a bit but the wire was intact. I replaced that section of the wiring just in case. The problem is still present but very random.

My question is, what could cause this? If it would be the ring issue, why would I get the Open circuit code, which relates to a connection issue. Can the ring issue cause that code?

I ordered a replacement sensor in case it's the culprit, but the continuity test for the wiring didn't show any issue.

After the sensor replacement 2 years ago, I never got the random DSC engagement with power loss issue again. Never.

Open to any ideas and advices. Thanks!

Vince

According to what I have read on various forums including this one, there have been issues with 3rd party sensors, did you fit genuine BMW or ATE which are OEM?

You could swap your existing sensors over and see if it solves the issue that side or indeed, see if it switches sides.

These codes are fine for pointing you in the right direction but in the end it often comes down to old skool experimentation and elimination.
