Hi, i am looking to buy a 60,000-70,000 mileage bmw 1 series 116 either a 2015 diesel with a B37 engine or a 2014 petrol with a N13 engine. Which car along with its engine is the most reliable and will cause the least issues?

I've had an N13, mine wasn't great (but better than some). My specific issues were:
Oil thirst
Noisy timing chain, replaced at 66,000 miles
Broken turbocharger heat shield - a huge thing that's disproportionately expensive, and they all break & rattle
Split air intake pipe

Others have reported coolant leaks, but that didn't affect me.

Went well enough, but you just needed to do regular oil level checks.

I have no experience of the B37, so I'll let someone else chime in on that one.

The 116d is likely to be more dependable I reckon.

The N13 is a pretty good engine to drive and pretty punchy in pre-LCi 118I (to 2014) or LCi 120i (2015-16) forms, though is known for coolant loss issues.

I haven't heard any reports of common issues with the B37 diesel engine.

Your first question to yourself should be "what sort of journeys will i be making" if its short around town or similar then petrol is the way to go, Diesel will cause DPF/ EGR issues. If there long motorway type the diesel purely for economy.

Ether way keep up with the extra oil changes.

N13 us the worst BMW engine this century.

I have owned 3 N13 engines, my current 114i has 60k on it and ive spent 2k on it in the last month alone

timing chain kit (which needs to be done on all of them) was 1350 - coolan leak - hydraulic valves (unsure on correct name) - Parking sensor faults and replaceents - and now i have 2x new error codes that im took scared to google!

Every mechanic who has worked on my F21 114i N13s has said its the worst BMW engine and they my experience proves this

i feel like an absolute fool for buying another one (someone wrote off previous)

I thought the worst engine was supposed to be the 2litre in the 2000s..M40 something....or the one in the 320is E90 lol.

I've a 2014 N13 118i 170bhp with 40k on the clock. I've done 8k on it in 3.5 years. It's quite nippy and pretty economical on petrol. New gearbox at 35k and just had new rack at 40k....glad I have extended warranty! I wouldn't buy a newish car without one. Engine has been fine...doesn't use oil either but I don't really do the mileage. Think b48 is the way to go.

Thankyou for the responses. Think im leaning towards the 116d it seems to be the most reliable out of the pair although a bit behind on the performance side. Anybody have any personal experiences with the 116d 2015?
I've absolutely loved mine. B37 is an engine that is as good as its maintenance - whatever you buy, make sure it has been maintained well!
Fortunately mine had been very well looked after before I got it (and still is!) so the engine is extremely quiet and acceleration is nice and smooth.

As far as performance goes, I've never felt a lack of power. I tend to drive in 'comfort' and 'D' gear but 'sport' and 'DS' gear really sharpens it up, perfect for motorway runs. Excellent car for whatever you want to use it for.
