Drive train problem warning

On Sunday we were just coming off a motorway when the display popped up a lovely 'Drivetrain problem. Drive moderately. Proceed to your nearest dealer' type message. The car didn't feel any different so we stopped, called BMW Mobile Care (watched the car do a diagnostic check and upload the info to BMW) who offered to recover the car or suggested driving on if it felt ok. We choose to continue and the car was fine. On Monday I dropped the car off at the local BMW dealer and they said that the only problem was a report from some sort of sensor which detects which direction the car was pointing. They checked the sensor's connection but nothing was wrong. It was just a 'glitch'. I think that a couple of other people on here may have had similar experiences. Anything I should be worried about?

On an ungrateful note, when we picked the car up they said 'Oh and we washed and valeted it for you.'. Now on the face of it this is a nice gesture but I was somewhat livid. When we collected the car on day one it was unwashed, went straight to a detailers for a nice coating and has never even seen a sponge. Quality cleaning products and sensible techniques only since then. I can't see any marks or swirling fortunately. It had never occurred to me that for a simple diagnostic check that they'd wash it too. Guess from now on I'll leave a 'Clean this on pain of death!' note in the car whenever I hand over the keys.

Sorry to hear of the issue. But yes, ALWAYS ask them not to clean the car. My 123d went in for the security update and they would have even cleaned it for that, so when asked I made sure that they didn't clean it at all.

I always say, feel free to Hoover / valet the interior. But leave the outside well alone!
They can clean mine all over no probs.

I've had this message a few times. Most recently on Friday. The car then felt like the cruise was continually on. When lifting off the accelerator the revs would remain even using the tip tronic and gogging down a few gears the speed would remain constant. Was a couple of miles from my destination so continued. Car was parked for about 2 hours, went and had some fun on the track and when I returned suddenly remembered the issue. Started the car, began to drive and all seemed normal. Very strange!!

This happened to me this morning. Car was rough as a junkies carpet from start up. Popping and banging on overrun being really jerky when changing gear. Took it to the dealer and it turns out it was a low battery voltage. Which in turn means the ecu is not supplied enough power. Hmm  very strange! I know. Anyway battery has been replaced and it's all good now.

Mine is still a complete mystery - tried a couple of test drives today including hard acceleration and everything now seems fine. The oil level is still showing as normal. I'm still a bit nervous and can't wait for dealer to do full check on Wednesday, but for the time being the problem seems to have gone away.

Driving into London tomorrow (Wembley) so fingers crossed problem doesn't happen again.

Drove from Reading to Wembley and back yesterday - fast motorway and a few tentative hard accelerations. No sign of any problem. Still want garage to do a thorough check but looks like problem has resolved itself - which is what others are saying.

Just need to avoid driving through any deep flood water now.

Car going into dealer tomorrow morning so hopefully they will be able to find out exactly what happened and why. Since last week have driven about 250 miles including fast motorways and hard acceleration, and no sign of warning light coming on.

Just got back from dealer. As predicted they know what happened to my car, but have no idea why. Apparently the fault codes indicated there was a misfire in cylinder 4, which caused it to flag the warning light and go into 'limp mode'. However after a day of checking and 2 test drives there is now no sign of a misfire (and since the warning light went out of its own accord I've driven it about 250 miles with no problems). The test results did mention something about misfires can occur after repeated cold starts, but I don't know if this is relevant in this case. The day before it happened I had driven from Cardiff to Reading in torrential rain then left the car overnight, but can't imagine this would cause any problems.

Anyway, its been given a clean bill of health and the error codes have been reset, so just keeping fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. I'd still be interested to know what would cause a misfire, and if this is a particularly common fault.

This happened to me today. I was in sport mode and i was giving it high revs as i was going through the box. When i happened i looked in the mirror and there was black smoke behind me. It seems to be ok now.
