Dpf removel vs dpf 'gutting' question

Hi new to the forum hoping to get some help :) just got a question about my 123d, I had my dpf 'gutted' and a stage 2 remap done on my car a few months back, all went well and was happy with it...
Decided I wanted a bit more noise so thought I'd take the first of the 2 silencers out ( the smaller one) while doing this while the exhaust was off i started the car up just to see what it sounded like and it was pretty quite, I thought it would be very loud considering all that it was going through was an empty dpf? Anyway finished the exhaust off and it has a little more grumble but not as much as I hoped. I had a 123d before this one and the bloke I brought it from had taken the same silencer out I have and the dpf taken out completely ( not gutted just a straight through pipe ) as he does it before it became an mot failure to not have a dpf, but it sounded completely different and sounded awesome! I really would that sound from the car I have now! Would putting a straight pipe in instead of a gutted dpf really make the much difference in noise or could it be something else? I rang the company that done the work on my car and they assured me the dpf was defiantly gutted and there are weld marks on the dpf if you look closely that looks like it has been opened up too.

Any light on this would be great thanks :)

Thanks for the reply, But my old 123d just had dpf removel and the first silencer removed and it sounded completely different! Had a real grumble to it and this one now just seems a little louder than before? Is there anyway the company could have gutted my dpf but left a filter/ silencer in there? It should of been pretty loud when I started the car without the exhaust on it surly? Thanks

I rang the company ( narco tuning ) and he said the dpf would have been gutted and the cat taken out, but that's just there word, I'm guessing if that's true it would have been very loud on start up when I started it without the exhaust on?
As far as I no with the old one, he just said the dpf had been replaced with a straight through pipe and the middle silencer ( the smaller one of the 2 ) taken out and also he had the twin f20 exhaust tips put on but again exhaust tips wouldn't make much of a difference in noise would it? Also when turned the old car off the exhaust would make like a really nice burbling sound which this one doesn't have when I turn off. ( should have just kept my old one haha ) Thanks

Sorry to thread hijack but it's kind of on topic, I'm on the hunt for a new motor now due to mileage but I want to save a while so keeping the 123 until early 2017.

One question I wanted to ask is can you have the dpf bypassed by software ? So effectively tricking the ecu in to it not being there as you can with the EGR valve ?

The main reason being is that when I sell the car I don't think it's right to do so without a DPF due to MOT it would be harsh for somebody to get lumbered with the cost of a replacement, likewise if it's gutted you can argue that it won't be noticed at MOT but my uncle who has recently just passed his MOT licence for lack of a better phrase advised me that they've been told to look out for gutted DPF's now ! By checking for for welds.

So all in all I'm trying to be honest to the next buyer as I know how much these demon things cost, I could sell it without I'm sure but it'll reduce my buyer market which I'm reluctant to do.

I'd love to whip it off and go stage 2 but if I can't delete the DPF via software stage 1 will have to suffice.

That's alright mate but no you can't I'm afraid, where as the egr valve you can trick into being open/closed, the dpf is basically a big filter in the exhaust and that's the only way the exhaust gases to go! To be fair you have to be really looking hard to see the weld marks on mine though but it got through its last mot a few weeks back fine!

I've got mixed feelings on DPF or CAT removal. Their removal will allow motors to run more efficiently, with less restriction and I suppose that less fuel might be consumed as a consequence.

On the other hand, vehicle exhaust fumes are horrible noxious chemicals and we must all be better off for toxin reduction in our environment. For this reason, my CAT continues to serve.

My tow/snow vehicle is a pre-DPF Toyota 4x4 turbo diesel. I replaced the rusty main exhaust box with a high flow straight through box (like a cherry bomb). Two changes: lots more noise and more than 2mpg better fuel consumption when towing.

Diesel particulates are particularly bad in urban environments, which I reckon explains why it's illegal to remove the DPF.

Robust coercive action is around the corner for the offenders I reckon.

I hope I haven't hurt the feelings of the easily offended ;-)
