Been reading on the BMW coding website that it is possible to have a digital speedo display on the dash...

Has anybody actually managed to do this? Is it actually possible??

Its definitely possible via the hidden menu but this dissapears after you remove the key, but would be nice to be able to flick through options like MPG, RPM and Speed on the display...

Any coders out there already done this?

I've coded it. You just change one setting in the Kombi module. Don't remember which. I'll try to find my notes, if rob the viking doesn't answer this in the meantime. (I learned from him.)

I find it quite useful, actually. It shows almost exactly the same speed as the GPS, and not 5km/h over, as the speedo does.

I've done it, it was the first thing I did when I got my d-can cable set up and running. I also made the alarm chirp on lock and unlock.

I think the OP is probably after some help in doing it then.........

Just confirming it was indeed possible. As for help best look at you will need a diagnostic cable (type depends on age of car) a laptop and all the software, edibas and ncs expert, inpa and toolset32. This should get you connected to your car and able to edit ecu files. The digital speedo is in the Kombi module (which I think is the instrument cluster). If I recall correctly its called digital_v and needs to be set to aktiv. You can also get it to display the uncorrected speedo reading but I can't remember the name of the setting for this.

Where in the country are you OP?

So who can do this for me? :D
+1.
If there is anyone out there with the equipment required I wouldn't mind paying for the privilege of someone doing this for me :)

i concur. could also get my pro HU coded up too

I did this last week. There's guides on bmwcoding.com to change the digital_speedo in the KOMBI from nicht_aktiv to aktiv and code the car. Probably sounds like gobbledegook but rob the viking did an excellent guide to this - just tried to find it but can't at the moment. If you want me to search round for it, let me know.

I'm in the UK in Sheffield...

I've coded my M3 before and have all the software etc but never used NCSExpert -i just used INPA to run tests and NavCoder to unlock the TV and modify languages etc.... I need to get hold of the DCan cable now as my old cable doesn't work with the 1 series...

Once I have done mine - i would happily do it for other people.

Has anybody got and screen shots of it working? Where does the speedo actually appear....

I have this on my A3...

I'm wondering though as to why you want it over the dial on the 1 series? Will it be more accurate?

Hahaha I knew that would be picked up on.... When it stops raining I'm doing the interior properly! It needs it!
Incidentally, my digital speedo and dial both read the same. Is it the same in the 1er? Or is the feed different?

I'm curious to know where it actually shows up?

Is it something that your press the control button and shows up in the list of things with the MPG and Range??

I'll be interested in having a go at this and possibly getting the little alarm chirp. I have an old cable that i used to use on my mk5 golf... i wonder if this will be any good or if i'll need to get the d-can cable. I seem to remember that the golf uses a canbus system?

This is the value to change;

BC_DIGITAL_V
nicht_aktiv -> active

You'll need to have a good read at bmwcoding.com before you attempt anything. FWIW, this is a relatively simple mod.

This is what it looks like on my car;

It matches the needle speed ie, it isn't corrected.
