Hi Guys.
I have a problem I'm unable to get rid of.
When I turn on my car, the logo of a red lift with a car on shows up on my dash. I also have the light for handbrake illuminated all the time.
When I read out the error codes it says the rear brake pad sensor is worn.
I've just had my rear discs and sensors replaced. My mechanic even checked the wire all the way up to the engine room, and it was intact.
When I go into the OBD, it says ------ for both my front and rear brakes, and I'm unable to do a reset....

It all started about 4 monts ago when I hit a hole in the street with my rear right wheel, and it immidiately showed the brake error on my dash.

Neither myself or my mechanic have any idea how this can be fixed...

Does any of you have suggestions???
-will it help to get a new ABS sensor for that wheel???

Thanx for any help, it's highly appreciated :)

Did your mechanic put a new sensor on when he changed the brakes? You can't reuse the old ones, once it's been unplugged you have to throw it and get a new one. They are cheap though, think they are less than ÂŁ20 from BMW

Just reread your post and saw that you had the cables replaced, it might depend on how he tried to reset the brake wear on the on board trip computer, I think you may need to do it through the OBD port but I'm not completely sure.

I drive 38-40.000 miles a year, so I change the brakes every 2nd year or so.

I had my fronts changed last year, and when I drove into the hole and the ODB showed the red car on ramp, we tried resetting everything including front brakes to make the illuminated handbrake light go away.

So maybe I should buy new sensors for front and back, and have him install them as an attempt? :)

thanx for your suggestions

I would try changing the brake wear sensors before doing anything else. The one on the rear may have had an internal fault that has become exasperated from shock when you hit the hole.
As said, only use genuine sensors as the cheaper ones can cause faults like you are experiencing.

Update:

Due to a faulty ABS ring and sensor, I had my mechanic change both the front and rear brake pad wear sensors...
That did NOT fix the problem.
I still get the red car on ramp on startup, my handbrake light is on all the time, and the iPhone APP BMWhat reads an error on rear brake pad wear.

I've tried resetting through the dash, so now I have ------- both front and rear.

Only idea I can come up with is to go to BMW and pay big bucks them to plug in their reset tool...

Anyone else??

Had BMW in Denmark attach an original computer and they were UNABLE to reset the brake pad wear thing.....

The mechanic said the car must have some kind of electrical fault.
The were also unable to reset my service indicator (due to the car computer saying the oil level sensor is broken(it has been replaced))

BMWs computer could read these faults:

0040A4 DDE: Exhaust-gas recirculation contoller, position, long-term drift
0041F1 DDE: Electric fan, activation
0041F2 DDE: Electric fan, activation
004329 DDE: Cooling-air-flap system
0049F2 DDE: Message (speed. 0xCE)
004B22 DDE: Electric fan
004B37 BSD, message; oil condition sensor: Missing
005DE1 DSC: Brake-pad wear: plausibility, rear axle

My brake problems started when I drove into a hole on a road, and it instantly came up with the red car on ramp. This was about a year ago, and I've spent a lot of money on garage hours having brake pad sensors replaced and computers attached.
This time with original sensors and an original BMW tester/computer, it didn't work...
Both my front and rear sensors says "------" in the ODB.

And as written earlier, the BMW mechanic said that now it could only be due to some electrical fault on the car....

Does anybody have an idea of where to start the search? :)
