It's nearly time to get rid of the runflats for some proper tyres. I was thinking of fitting Michelin's however my local tyre special has suggested Uniroyals due to good performance in the wet.
Has anybody on the forum tried them? Or has anybody got suggestions on other makes of tyres?

Most on here advocate ditching runflats, though I've done over 100k on them over the last 10 years or so and find them very reassuring, it's not just about ultimate grip on warm, dry roads or track, it's also about mile munching, hitting the road after a weekend away with 200 plus miles to do, 5 deg and pouring rain. Decent runflats might not be the very best on dry roads or track on a summer Sunday though they're better in the wet and low temperatures, they're better than high performance tyres like MPSS more of the time, and reassuring in the event of stability during a blow-out; and provide the possibility of getting off the motorway, or even home, after a puncture.

I've been pleasantly surprised by run flats recently and I think they have certainly evolved. However I use Uniroyal on my old clk and MX5 and they are superb tyres and amazing in the wet.

I also use them on the Mx5 on track, a bit soft on the side walls bit again quite reassuring.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asym 5 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport are the only three that should be on your shortlist...IMO.

I am distinctly unimpressed my nearly new set of Uniroyal Rainsport 5's.

I find them very average in the wet, and I wish I had spent a little bit more and got Goodyear Assymetric 5's.

On my 335i convertible I had falken FK510 and they are very good, I have also fitted a set to the wife's Alfa. They are certainly a class above the Uniroyals IMO.

I tried a set of Uniroyal's on my old Mk3 Focus ST when my Goodyear Eagle F1's needed replacing during a very wet winter. Might be an unpopular opinion, but I thought they were rubbish all-round... And they lasted no more than 8 months... Don't think i'd go back to them again in a hurry.

I'm changing my M140i tyres this week and opting for the Pilot Sport 4 tyres to replace the old MPSS. I've done that much reading over the past week on tyres I'm just that fed up now :lol2:

It's a good swap, but do all 4 if you can - I just did rears first and it was dangerous above 50mph swaying all over. I then did the fronts and I love it now - perfect dry grip and amazing wet grip. I cant remember the last time I had traction issues compared to when I had MPSS fitted. :lol2:

Be interested to know how you get on with them on a car with that much power/torque.
I can tell you as I have the same power/torque - they are awesome and just as good as the MPSS in the dry, but 1 million times better in the wet.

Who is fitting them?

Not sure if you know, but BMW (well, my dealer anyway) will price match and fit them - they did all mine fitted for ÂŁ470, plus free valet/health check etc.

Ordered through Black Circles for ÂŁ470 fitted and Lodge Tyres are fitting them (Wheel alignment extra if needs doing). Always had good service from Lodge so they're normally my first choice.

I spoke to Lodge before ordering as I've heard them say in the past that normally they'll price match or even beat Black Circles if you phone them direct, however when I told them it was Michelin he then said he can't beat them as Michelin own Black Circles so always give the best price!

It was Black Circles that BMW price matched for me. They were silly high at first, something like ÂŁ686 for all 4 tyres fitted but they matched the ÂŁ470 so I was happy.

Michelin don't own Blackcircles:

It's a UK private limited company.

Take that back!

Michelin have at least a 75% stake in the company:

I TAKE THAT BACK oooppppps haha

Had them fitted today and what a difference it makes. They checked the tracking FOC and it was within tolerance so must just be a BMW/M140 thing to have them wear badly on the edges (understand its a common thing on this forum). Tyre pressures were also low (my bad!).

With the fresh MPS4's and decent tyre pressures the car feels so much more safe and planted, especially in this weather - meaning i can go round a corner without the back end trying to kill me.

Overall would recommend the PS4 for the M140i as a good replacement for the PSS.

I've now got PS4 S on the 19" rims but they are still in the garage, not sure whether to try the Goodyear SSport on the 18 inch rims ?

Surely go winter tyres on the 18's if you have such a good summer tyre on the 19's ???

Apologies I wasn't clear I have another spare set and will use for occasional track days

Thanks, will go with the best deal on either then!
The PS4s on the 19" are proving to be very good in the recent cold weather so leaning towards those as tried and tested :)

Hey Guys

Re. BEST TYRES / BEST BMW TYRES / RECOMMENDED TYRES

So what we're saying is that the best tyres by popular consensus for most BMW sedans (excl SUVs) is Michelin Pilot Sport 4s'?

Does anyone know what the stock issue tyres are? From memory I thought they were Continentals -
I know from previous experience and conversations that certain OEMs tend to work well with tyres that have been used during model development.
Thus, some tyres available "aftermarket" so to speak do not work too well.

Regards,

Gavin
