As above, thinking about a trip up to see Wibbles but is it worthwhile getting it retrofitted, us it worth the money?

I probably only want it for the music side of things so should I bother :?:

Thanks in advance
Andy.

I love CarPlay. Makes everything easier IMO!

I must be in the minority as it seems largely superfluous to me.

If it allowed to me use numerous 3rd party apps then maybe it would have more attraction to me but let's be realistic, it doesn't do much.

Apple Maps is hopeless, I can use Spotify and Napster natively anyway, I've no interest in audiobooks and I've no need for Siri as the native voice command does everything I could ever need and more.

As for the aesthetics, it turns the screen into "My first Tablet" from Mothercare.

For what its worth, I've had my M140i 4 day so far and it has apple car play. I've had CarPlay before on other vehicles (touch screens) and also iDrives on my old Z4.

It's ying and yang on the M140i. It doesnt 'add' anything extra, but simply more convenience for your preferred choice.

Example: I like apple maps. It gives me the speed limits, it's relatively swanky looking, and easy to read. It also has a whole host of POIs that the BMW doesnt. It also lets me use Siri to control everything, meaning I dont have to say things in a slightly different way for the BMW to understand and so on.

But then with a flick of a switch, i'm back in BMW land, able to use BMW maps. music and so on.

The M140i I have actually has online entertainment (BMW spotify for lack of a better phrase) AND CarPlay; now that, I dont understand.

In essence, it's like an argument of Mac VS Windows. They both do the same thing, in different ways. Having both is pointless, but there are many (and on some days, I fall into that category) where Apply CarPlay is the winner.

Apple Car Play is the only one of my optional extras that I wouldn't spec again.

Perhaps I'm missing the point? But it's just adding an infotainment system within an infotainment system.

Maps: BMW system can do this
Phone calls: BMW system can do this
Other apps (e.g Spotify) I've now turned ACP off and it's still picking up my Spotify app in my iDrive menu

The only thing I can see that it has that the BMW system doesn't have is text messaging, and that's rubbish because it's SIRI based so you cant actually see what has been said or what you're saying in reply. No punctuation etc... just useful for 'yes' 'no' responses.

Someone made a point about ACP calls being clearer. Yes, they probably are. If you're getting Apple Car Play for free, go ahead, but I wouldn't pay the ÂŁ235, or whatever it was, again.

Nope. Had it on a rental Golf, and used it a few times for the novelty, but when I got back into the 140, I never felt myself thinking 'I wish this had carplay'

Is it possible to code it via bimmercode?

I have the hardware needed for it.

I like CarPlay, its much more reliable than the ConnectedDrive apps, such as Spotify and I find it very useful for reading out and replying to texts whilst driving.
In terms of Apple Maps, the traffic can be a bit hit and miss (probably better than BMW RTTI) and sometimes it seems to lose you on a road but it picks itself back up quite quickly. I also find it much easier to find places/POIs using Google than the native menus.

Not sure it's worth retrofitting just for the music side of it.

It's worth it for the enhanced call quality. Much clearer using WiFi over traditional Bluetooth.
Not once, as I have been rolling my eyes as the Mrs telephones me with an updated shopping list, have I thought to myself.. "I wish the call quality was better.."

Same applies when my mum calls me to tell me someone I went to school with nearly 40 years ago has had another kid. Nope, didn't wish I had better call quality then either.

I guess if you're female and you spend 2 hours on the phone in your car to your BAE then marginally improved call quality might help but as a guy I tend to make phone calls last as little as possible.

It is disappointingly limited (by Apple, not BMW), but is just about worth ÂŁ235, assuming you want the Pro Media anyway.
Personally, I am not that impressed by Pro Media as the sat nav is as poor as the standard business nav. However, I probably wouldn't be happy looking at the narrow screen of the standard unit now I've got used to the wide screen!

As posted elsewhere, if you're looking to keep the listed price of the car down, you can get it added post delivery for the same price, or I believe people on here can help add it later.
I've heard that BMW are about to stop charging an upfront cost for this, replacing it with an ÂŁ80 per year charge.
Is the ÂŁ235 upfront just to provide ACP for 3 years? Will we then get charged ÂŁ80pa?

Over the months I am finding myself using Carplay less and less and reverting to BMW's idrive functionality instead.
I've turned it off completely.

The one thing it has that the BMW system doesn't is the text messaging function. However, I quickly got fed up of my music being interrupted by text messages coming through. On the occasion where I did decide to let the car read out the text message for me, I found longer messages quite hard to hear/understand and quickly found myself waiting until I'd stopped to read/respond anyway. Basically, anything involving voice commands has the potential to be very frustrating and unreliable in my experience.

I just discovered WhatsApp has been added about 10 mins ago! I might have to turn notifications off tho as one group chat I'm in is very active. Siri reading it all out is hilarious tho!

I didn't know it did WhatsApp either. How can you use it Wibbles if you're on Android, or have you just been testing it with somebody else's phone?
Although I'd never defect from iOS, I understand the Android equivalent to Car Play allows Google Maps via the in-car screen, which would be perfect.

Pop up for a visit Andy and you can have a look at it on my car, if you like it I can retrofit the antenna and possibly retrofit Carplay on the sameday.

As an android user I actuallyt think it's good. I have been using it for the last 3 days for personal research and I've been impressed with the integration of the spotify & deezer. being able to send texts and now Whatsapps is impressive & while I can send texts with my Galaxy S8 I cannot access Whatsapp, which i use way more than texts.

Even though I sell carplay retrofits and some may think I am biased, my day job is in software development & testing, so I know a good user interface when I see one. this implementation is not without flaws, but I genuinely think it's good.
I'll have to get my act together Craig and get my hands on the car and pop up to see you, keep saying it but there's always something that crops up. Expensive hobby running 3 cars. :eek2:
