Hi,

Just bought my first BMW and have a question

The car is 4 years old and has just come off BMW lease on a 2011 plate having covered 122000 miles it has a full BMW service record.

However out of interest I was trying to check when the auto box was last serviced and it would seem BMW claim its lifetime fluid and does not fall under any maintenance schedule.

In 2008 there own service schedule detailed 100000 Miles but in 2011 they removed the service completely.

My question / concern is should I get it serviced now considering its already covered 122000 trouble free miles or is it best left alone considering its working fine.

Would I be better to just keep on punting the miles on and replacing the box with a low mileage one should it ever fail in my ownership ? ( I will be putting on 20k a year motorway)

Regards

I'd get it changed as they say that about diff oil as well, I'd get them both done just as piece of mind

As above change the gearbox and diff oil for peace of mind.

That kind of miles on that year of car is mostly going to be motorway and if you are doing the same then it's not so harsh on gearboxes and the drive train in comparison to someone thrashing it round town and I suspect it will last you a fair while longer yet.

Based off no facts at all but, didn't BMW change the auto transmission to a DCT in 2011 1ers? assuming it's a dry plate dual clutch if there's no more maintenance notes about it there would be no fluid to change :?: I know the old Torque converter auto needed fluid changing every so often.

Thanks, very interesting.

It is a 6 speed box with the paddle shift fitted. I will try and do some more research on what you have said. I do a lot of long distance driving so my ear will take a while to tune into whats a natural sound and whats not.

Considering the mileage it already has and the fact lower mileage replacements are available on ebay and BMW have no interest in servicing I have decided its probably a better idea to just leave it and put the service saving towards a replacement should it ever fail.

As I am putting 20k plus on it a year then I can well see it passing 200k before issues by which time most of the car will be in a serviceable state and due for replacement.

BMW already took the hit on the mileage depreciation so I see it as bargain motoring :)

Go to a ZF service centre and get them to do it. I did mine at 72K miles. Brunswick garage in Enfield are ZF approved centre. Or you just leave it and get a ZF remanufactured box direct from ZF...They reckon they put all components back to new tolerances...

It's been done today, so much for sealed for life.

The oil out of the gearbox was jet black and stank, you would think it was from an engine drain it was that rank.

126000 miles on it, genuine BMW replacement sump with integrated filter and BMW fluid fitted at an independent.

On a side note it was noticed the sump plug removed did not have a sealing washer fitted, this must not have been fitted from new.

Definitely don't feel like i have wasted my money on that service now.

BMW are a sales centre, follow common sense and component manufactures spec for independent servicing.

Hi there, I recently purchased my first BMW, a 120d with the automatic gearbox/paddleshifts. Like yourself I have been trying so hard to research these gearboxes (lost my Alfa Romeo to a cowboy replacing clutch so extra cautious) Can I ask which garage did you get to change your gearbox? Did you research for a suitable garage? I live in the north of England but may travel for a good service. Did you get full replacement or just fluid changes?
Thanks for any help

I had the oil changed and the filter, using genuine parts. The filter was about ÂŁ150 and the oil in the region of ÂŁ20 per litre.

Total came in around ÂŁ600 with the diff service too.

I went to a garage in Chippenham Wiltshire, Declan Mccormacks.

I've put nearly 20k on since my first post and it's still faultless, worth it for complete peace of mind, 2011 plate with 140k on now.

This is it as I recall.

Or if you have the Carly app it is now built into that.

Put key in the ignition
2. Click on the Start button without having your foot on the accelerator. At this point the lights on the dash will all light up. 3. Push the accelerator to the floor and hold it for about 30 seconds. For me at about 20 seconds I heard a very faint sound. This is the reset sound. Don't worry if you don't hear it. Just keep your foot on the pedal for about 30 seconds.
