002E81 electric coolant pump, speed deviation

Codes read on a service a couple of weeks ago and again yesterday. "002E81 electric coolant pump, speed deviation" showing on both occasions. Previous time I'd read my codes around about March-April time this didn't come up. (I'll have to check through paperwork to see if this code has come up before)

I think I already know what everyone's gut feeling will be on this, but is this an absolutely sure sign the pump is on its way out?

2006, ~89k miles, no symptoms showing.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Driven to work and back today, run diagnostics when I got home and it hasn't returned. BUT I'm a little paranoid now to say the least. I had a bong and a warning light flash up on the instrument cluster twice, just the screen wash - PHEW but christ did my heart sink!

That^ looks like the best deal around. Pierburg and Mahle, are they OEM bits? bmwmotormec reputable?

Have you stopped and heard your rad fan running when you've got out, or when it's first started etc?
No haven't heard the fan running.

Thanks again.

Tried peering down into that front corner of the engine bay - there's about half a dozen hoses and pipes completely obscuring my view :?

It's not a nice job and it's all done from underneath

Yea I've been checking out a few videos on youtube, fiddly but doable.

I'm fairly happy the pierburg is the one to go for. Seems from some of the videos I've seen that the original thermostat is metal though, whereas the mahle replacement looks plastic... :chin:

Pump, thermostat and bolts arrived last week. Looking to fit this Saturday coming.

Going to get the coolant from my local dealer. Spoke to a guy their earlier said they keep plenty in stock so won't be a problem grabbing some one day this week. But other than that he didn't seem sure and didn't fill me with much confidence, so I'll ask here...

He reckons it takes 8 litres, 1:1 dilution ratio and normal tap water - is all that right?

So here we are, 8 hours into this having spent the last 2+ hours trying to plug in the electrical connector to the pump. Cannot believe it. Everything's in but we're stuck on the electrical connector and have been for over 2 bloody hours.

We've offered up the old pump just to try plugging it into that and it just won't go in. Just needs to go on another 2-3mm to click in but it won't.

My Dad and I are stumped. We're not idiots, we've swapped and an engine, gearbox, diff, suspension all sorts before. But at this rate I won't be driving her to work this week.

:x

I can still feel my thumbs this morning where I was trying to push that connector on with such force. My Dad used a 3/8th's extension and a ratchet to gently 'shock' it home. Madness. And yes we were happy the new connector matched, as I say we couldn't plug it back into the old one with our bare hands either.

Hey man, been pondering about doing the water pump on my 130 too as its now coming up to 100k, i was just wondering what the pump, thermostat and bolts set you back roughly? Also if you'd be willing to fit it for a pint and a packet of crisps?
Sounds like it was a pain!
Thanks but no thanks!! :lol2:

There's no doubt in my mind if we were to do it again we'd get it done a lot quicker, but once is enough.

It was dark by the time we were ready to fill/bleed the system so we said we'd leave it till this morning.

Parts were from motormec who also advertise on ebay. The pierburg pump, mahle thermostat and genuine bolts were ÂŁ305. I understand these all to be genuine parts, the same as you'd get from a dealer, unless someone can show me otherwise.

I searched the forum for a Cotswold quote for the pump, iirc in October 2016 they quoted someone ÂŁ534 for the pump alone. I'd imagine if you went to a dealer to get this done you wouldn't get much change from ÂŁ1k.

I did my thermostat today..i feel some of your pain..haha. horrible job

Edit: stat was ÂŁ87 from cotswold if that helps anyone
Brava man!

For anyone else reading this, there are some really good guides on YouTube for this job. Wouldn't have wanted to attempt it without those.
