F20 120D N47 - Slight Misfire under acceleration

Post by edbutler » Wed Aug 31, 2016 9:20 pm

Hi All,

First please may i apologise for my first post being a question, bad forum etiquette i know! I'm an active technical member on many car forums however so will make sure i pay my dues!

I have recently bought a 2013 120d XDrive and love it. Unfortunately it seems to have a slight misfire/hesitation when flat out in 3rd+ gear, 2500RPM or higher. I know this engine is pretty ubiquitous, but cant find anything related on other forums.

It almost feels as though one of the injectors is occasionally not injecting enough fuel. The car has a full BMW SH with recent full service - no fault codes.

Does anyone know what could possibly cause such a condition before i start throwing in injector cleaner out of desperation? I want to get the car remapped, but ideally want this solving beforehand :(

Many thanks!

Welcome.

Is the "no fault codes" comment from the recent service, or have you actually checked yourself? If its true, that suggests its unlikely an injector problem, as that should throw something up - its emissions related. Hmmm...

Fuel filter replaced recently? Possible poorly fuel pump (but again, surely a fault code for that)? Long shot, turn the traction control off, and see if that makes it run any better, just to eliminate electronic interference with your driving.

Good luck.

It's the transfer box. xDrives are a bit crap I'm afraid.

Every owner has reported a stutter/lumpiness/misfire/judder/rough running during acceleration. Sell it, by a RWD, and remap that - far more fun.

Thank you both for your replies!

Notts: Sorry i should have said, I would never trust a dealer 'no faults found, sir' - i did the scan myself. I do find that these days, cars with aspiration/fuelling issues often need to virtually die before a code is thrown unfortunately!

Marci: Ooh thats interesting, never thought that but i suppose it makes some weird sense. Ill do some reading up on the subject, many thanks!

Exactly the same issue i had with same engine albeit a 118d RWD, I have started running VPower Diesel and has solved this issue, it was more like a Turbo/injector flutter with mine...Worth a try before you go down the possibly more expensive route of diagnosis, but as @Marco says above, sounds like a well known thing with the transfer box...

If it's an XDrive, then as Marco says, chances are it's the transfer box.

Get it back to the dealer and show them what it's doing, they'll probably just replace the transfer box if they're a good dealer, or blame the tyre wear or something if they aren't.
