Introduction

Hi everyone. Members are often asking the same questions on wheels and tyres so I have compiled the following FAQ for this topic based on what members have posted.

1. What are the standard wheel and tyre sizes for BMW 1er?

7JX16 ET:44 .......... for 205/55/16 tyres
61/2JX16 ET:42 ..... for 195/55/16 tyres

7JX17 ET:47 .......... for 205/50/17 tyres
71/2JX17 ET:47 ..... for 225/45/17 tyres (only rear)

71/2JX18 ET:47 ..... for 205/45/18 tyres (front)
8JX18 ET:49 .......... for 225/40/18 tyres (rear)

2. What do the different BMW OEM 1er wheel styles look like?

4. Can I replace my RunFlat Tyres ("RFT") with conventional non RFTs on my BMW OEM wheels?

This is a highly contentious issue. From a practical perspective, the answer is yes, however 1er owners should satisfy themselves regarding:

a. Your BMW warranty. It appears that using non RFT at least voids your BMW warranty in relation to anything related to the use of non RFTs.

b. Your insurance. ie that your insurance company does not consider using non RFT on a 1er to be a modification which voids or otherwise creates an exception to your policy. The general consensus appears to be that non RFT are not considered a modification to your 1er that changes your insurance.

c. Legal requirements. Are there any relevant legal requirements in your jurisdiction to carry equipment to deal with any flat? Regardless, owners should consider how to deal with flats from a practical point of view.

d. Your safety. Cars fitted with RFT generally have greater control after any (especially sudden) loss of tyre pressure at speed.

The run flat tyre indicator works fine with non RFT as the 1er uses an

5. OK, I've decided to get non RFT- what do I do about any flat tyres?

Try using the BMW Mobility Kit (see

) or use a similar third party product.

6. I cannot find 18" non RFT that are identical to OEM spec- what can I use?

Widest specs that keep the speedometer as accurate as possible and understeer/oversteer bias with no guard rubbing is 225 40 18 front and 245 35 18 rear (see

). Those wanting more oversteer bias may consider 225 40 18 for both front and rear.

7. Will 255 tyres fit on the rear?

Tyre manufacturers generally specify that 255 tyres are too wide for all wheels up to and including 8" in width. However, TUV has certified some 255 tyres for use with 8" wide wheels. See

. Members generally report no rubbing issues for 255 tyres on the standard BMW 18" 208M wheels.

As an aside, I noticed that the low pressure warning wasn't as good with non RFT - on non-RFT's the warning only went off when the pressure was REALLY low, like under 6PSI. RFTs report it at over 20PSI.

My experience regarding non-RFT tyre pressure indication is different from yours. On my wheels, pressure indicator annunciated when the pressure in one wheel had dropped by what I would guess was around 6-8 psi (when I checked with a tyre gauge after I got home, 60km later, the tyre pressure was down by 10psi from the rest).

I'd like to switch to Michelin PS2 ZP tyres. There doesnt seem to be a 205 45 18 fitment for the 130i. Is there any problem in using a 225 40 18 same as the rears?

Hi everybody, I have question, I just change front Euforias on 142´ wheels to CSC2 non runflats. I am wondering to put on rear 235/40 R 17 instead of 225/45 R 17. Do I fit this size on 7,5x17 wheel and also on the car??? Thanks a lot Jerry

I have standard 208M wheels on my 130i M sport.

From what the FAQ tells me the front alloys are 7.5" wide and the rears are 8" wide, correct me if this isn't the case.

Can i still put a RUNFLAT 225/40/R18 tyre on the front alloy wheel that is 7.5" wide rather than the 205/45/R18 that is comes with? Does it fit on ok without trouble, does it look alright.

If anyone has done this then please post pics or links to pics if you can.

Again, this is putting on a Runflat replacement not non runflat.

Not sure about the sizes listed above.

My 120d has the 208M wheels on it.
The Bridgestone Potenza RE050 runflats at the back are 245/35/18 88Y.

The car had only done 400 miles when the dreaded red light came on!
Cost of replacement - £272

I had to get it straight from BMW as it's a special order.

Folks, where would I be able to get the Schnitzer 18 type IV's, size 8 front 8.5 rear with 225 front and 245 rears suitable for my 123D? I am also looking at fitting these with run flats.

Would these work with my OEM M sport package?

I am looking to lower the car another 25-30 mm over what it is as presently - there is still a fair gulf between the wheel and arches.

Is this doable? :?

If you have standard wheels that came with the car then tyre pressures are detailed on the sticker which can be seen on the 'B' pillar on the drivers side as you open the door.

Good idea though to get them detailed on here for info!

Fitted the 8.5" OE rears with 255/35 Falken 452.
The original 8" rears are now on the front with 235/40 Falkens.

Very hard to tell the difference unless you're an anorak

255s will fit but from what I heard are not recommended for 8 inch rims, 245s would be a safer bet if you have 8 inch wide rim. If on the other hand you have 8.5 inch rims you will be fine. I think BMW changed from 8 to 8.5 from 2007 models, not 100% sure.
