I was also surprised that all bells and whistles didn’t prevent a collision.
Funny detail: the wheel of the tesla touched my wheel and this snapped off the teslas tyre valve so he had an instant flat tyre.
It was quite obvious whose fault it was, not mine, I am now busy getting it repaired.

Yes, today I received my car back! All damaged parts were replaced, the dealer did a good job, car looks mint again.
What a joy to drive a proper car again, I spent a week in a 2016 yaris, which I can only describe as a transportation device. 3 cylinder 1000cc, hifli tyres, and more to nag about. It brought me to work and back, and made me realize how good even a basic bmw is!

got underneath and replaced the gearbox splash shield, found some other miscelaneous trim that needed a bit of securing and discovered the clamp for the back box has cracked and isn’t doing a whole lot of clamping, fifty quid!! I’m sure I can find one cheaper if I look hard enough

Today the dealer did a recall on the brake vacuum line. They also changed the software, don’t know why. But a lot of things are different now; first the engine was running very bad, I think all fuel trim values were reset, the comsumption indicator is at liters/100km, can’t find how to change it, my stop/start memory function is gone, when retracting the key fob it sounds different. And after 60 km I’ve noticed that the engine feels more lively and more eager to rev, or maybe they have changed the throttle response, anyway it feels more powerfull. So I have to get used to my own car......
And the braking isn’t changed at all.

I called the dealer today about the brake line recall. The story is a little bit different, this is what they told me: the N43 has a mechanical vacuum pump to feed the brake booster. In case of a rattling chain this causes chips to come off the chain guides, these particles can clogg up the oil inlet in the sump and this can result in a failure of the vacuum pump. Without any warning the brake booster stops working. Not what you want. Apparently the vacuum pump stops before a lack of lubrication causes catastrophic bearing damage.
They have analyzed the chain with a software test (think they check the cam timing and deviation), the chain is fine, and the cars software now has a warning function in case of a (predicted) malfunction of the brake booster. So this is probably a combination of cam timing variation and oil pressure.

Finally got my car back from the body shop, only took 3 weeks

Had a free weekend, figured now would be a good time to sort out the binding brakes, fit the new HEL braided hoses for it whilst Im there.

<Internal screaming>

Turns out the previous owner, to hide the MOT fail corrosion on the pipes, had just slathered them with hammerite or something similar which had bonded into one big congealed mess, despite wire brushing off as much as I could and soaking it in penetrating oil, the brake pipe sheared off whilst trying to undo the connector to the hoses.

Bugger.

We've bodged a fix by connecting the old hose to the threaded end of where the pipe should connect to, and put a bleed nipple in the other end so in theory the brake system should be pressurised at least and have 3 working brakes. Now to try and find a garage to limp it to and hope they dont utterly shaft me on price to fix my half done messed up job. Was thinking of having a go at making my own brake pipes, but realised that the cost would very quickly mount up as I have none of the required tools or materials to do it, or experience, so by the time Ive bought everything Id need it'd probably cost as much as taking it to a garage.

you can get pre formed brake pipes on eBay if that’s the only thing stopping you doing it.
We snapped one brake pipe, applied a little bit of pressure to another to see if it would budge, it didnt and started to bend the pipe so then decided not to push out luck with the others. All 4 are going to need replacing because theyre all going to shear when I try and undo them to fit the hoses.

The little one we snapped Id be happy replacing myself, but I have no idea how to fit the ones that run the length of the car and dissapear up into the engine bay. I reckon its a miserable job to try and do crawling on your back on axel stands too :p

I will however get a preformed one to replace the one I broke, thats a good idea I didnt realise they made premade ones! So at least I can have 4 working brakes and it looks a little bit less like Ive utterly cocked it up myself for the garage!

Did you bend the metal spring clip to relieve the tension on the hose before trying to undo it? I've read a few times that this has helped enough to enable them to come apart without kinking the line.

Today another dead ignition coil...... luckily I wasn’t in a hurry and my car was in the parking garage at work. I always carry a spare and some tools, because I know they fail.
About 2 years ago I had a faulty coil and replaced all 4 with brand new delphi coils (this brand was supposed to be the best choice).
Any suggestion on a good coil for the N43?
