V Power

Not the usual best fuel debate... I have always run my car on v power or BP ultimate since getting it in September. Now I know putting 95 octane in the engine will adjust the timing (with small loss of bhp) and when I go back to 98 is will adjust back. Question is - how long does the engine actually take to adjust back to the 98? My thought is when doing a long motorway run is there any point still running 98? The answer would be yes if it takes a long time for the engine to re-adjust ...

If you are doing lots of motorway miles at constant throttle there's maybe not merit in using SUL.

Rule of thumb for car ecu to learn new fuel and adapt accordingly probably 50-100miles.
Depends how much Regular unleaded left in the tank I'd guess.

You'll need to well and truly flush that out with the 98 RON so a good couple of tanks if you run it low first. Could be be more I suppose, to get the full benefit.

The knock sensor should recognise any increase in RON straight away.
Vpower is 99 :)
Vpower and only vpower for me in any performance car.... Run of the mill engines standard 95 is good.

It's not so much the fuel rating for me as the extra cleaning agents that appeal as I do lots of short journeys.
Sure someone on here said they run around 300bhp not full on 95ron. Been so many fuel threads

Yet Tesco Momentum 99 has a higher Ethanol content and actually performs better on JB4 hence why I only use Tesco Momentum 99.

Here's a simple formula I use...

Performance car = Performance Fuel
Crappy car = Standard Fuel
Tescos and v power have the same octane level but v-power has the benefit of cleaning additives too.... If we're being honest in sure none of us can tell the difference.

Sawda,

On a standard car, Vpower and Tesco M99 - much of a muchness.

With a remap or piggyback which is additive in terms of boost [and adaptive in the case of JB4] TM99 does yield higher boost [~1psi] than v power. More boost = more power.

I agree the benefits of the BP/Shell branded SULP in terms of cleaning additives so a tank of ultimate or vpower periodically helps 'purge' fuel system

BP
VPower is 99RON, BP Ultimate is 97RON. Just saying
Tesco Momentum is also cheaper. Just saying. ;-)
The RON rating isn't the full story with fuels, yes vpower and tesco 99 have the same RON rating but the MON rating and subsequently the AKI ratings are different. Vpower has a lower MON rating than tesco 99.

AKI = RON + MON / 2

Vpower has an AKI rating of 92.5 and tesco 99 has an AKI rating of 93.

So technically speaking tesco 99 is the higher octane fuel and hence why jb4 users make more power on tesco 99 over vpower.

You're absolutely correct! It's more about the additives than the octane rating.
I've always used v-power in performance cars, branded (non supermarket) in my loved and non performance cars, and the cheapest of the cheap in hire cars!

In terms of BHP agains, how much are we really talking about here though between the cheap stuff and vpower? Like, a c5bhp increase.... or something more substantial and actually noticeable??

If you consistently got 5hp extra on v power / t99 over BP ultimate etc I'd be impressed.

However I do know from some years ago that impreza boys would always see the onset of knock earlier on BP fuel.

For me it's always been much more of a feel thing, cars I've had previously always seemed to pull and respond better on the 'higher' fuels than the BP stuff.

My last car was mapped on v power - as it turned out I use t99 more often simply because it was on the route home from work. However when it did get some v power and the ecu had adjusted it was quite noticeable.
So it the general consensus Tesco's M99 is better than Shell V-Power?

I am getting mixed results when I do a web search.

Shell is closer to me than Tesco but if it does make a tangible difference it may be worth the extra 10 minutes round trip.

Anyone comprehensively compared the two?

Not having done quite so many miles in my car as i thought I would. I can only say that from the few tanks of v power and the few tanks of T99. I found that the T99 had just the edge in the 'go' department. However, from a best all round I would have to say v power.

1. It quite nicely priced at the moment.
2. On a run I get better mpg then t99
3. Shell is round the corner and the guy who works there is a jolly nice chap and likes to talk cars! Customer service and all that!
Plus the man is a wizard with the ladies. Honestly you have never seen anything like it. It's lol funny to watch this guy work his magic.

If your car is standard the difference isn't anything to worry about. However if you are running JB4 with an adaptive map 5 for example that can actually change the boost depending on the octane / better fuel then Tesco99 is better. Also it's cheaper too so it's a no brainer.

Dale90 / Blind Pugh are one of the more respected and trusted members on here who have a 'tuned' BMW so rather than ask or do the testing one can say it's already been done and Tesco 99 has/is found to be superior.

Also I can confirm that Tesco 99 is better too with my own findings as JB4 shows better boost on Tesco 99.
