Have you tried deleting them and seeing what happens?
Then sending a new PM, having it read and seeing what happens?

This has been going on a while and I don't use tapatalk. I just presumed they had been read in it tho and didn't flag up on the site.

I don't use it either. I suspect the message is being read remotely via Crapatalk, and the main forum doesn't get the nod.
