I was speaking to some tuners yesterday and they told me that there are no gearbox limiters to unlock on a manual, but only on an auto. Is this true?

Am I the only one on here who doesnt know what a gearbox limiter is? i sense a learning opportunity :)

Torque converters I understand.

Torque limiters I understand (but wasnt aware they were ever fitted to cars).

Gearbox limiters, lost me I'm afraid, let alone unlocking them.

He's talking about a soft torque limiter that's mapped into auto cars out of the factory. Basically in the first two gears the engine map limits boost, spark, fuel pressure or similar depending on petrol or diesel to reduce the torque going through the gearbox to help prolong the life of the torque converter etc.

The first thing that goes when you get your car remapped is this torque limiter (which is quote often why the cars feel so much faster after a remap, but also why they destroy auto gearboxs after they've been remapped).

The post was basically saying that in manual cars the tuners had mentioned the fact that these torque limiters were not present in the engine maps of manual cars.

The std 135i had a limit added for 1st / 2nd gear on the manual box, mapping also removes this.

Thanks for the info. So they would still have to increase turbo boost and/or fuel input to reach the quoted power figures. Just thought that I might be able to do without them

Difficult to tell you without driving one and looking at some data logs but I suspect it's a combination of spark retard and less boost. However if boost is the same then it'll just be done on spark retard.

Thanks. Spoke with another tuner who confirmed that there are limiters even on manual boxes and that they're slackened via a remap (and he told me that his is custom, not generic). I'll be going with him as he seems to know his stuff more.

Manual cars have gear box limiters in the mapping and also 1 byte limiters

The problem is most of the so called tuners only use a software that shows them the maps in the ecu instead of finding them for them selfs as they are unable to or don't know how to in say hex
Stay away from tuners like this

Always find out how a tuner learnt to tune a cars and how long they have been do this
Use a tuner with a Dyno just look at what happened to keiren120d

Thanks for the advice Jason - you'd have been my first choice for a remap if we lived in the same country!

All the tuners here simply copy the map off the ECU, send it abroad and plug the ECU back in with the new map. All except for the one I mentioned... So I'll have to go with him. He's the one who's been longest in the business and has a very good reputation, so fingers crossed
