Tyre pressures

It's probably been done to death already, but have you ever given thought to best time to check your tyre pressures?

Ie. Do you have a compressor at home and come out and check them when they're stone cold? If so, the air will be denser. So you put more air in. Then by the time you drive off, the tyres warm up, the tyre pressure increases and before you know it you're driving around with over inflated tyres.

Is that right?

Cold tyres...

Tyres after 10 miles...

Yes and no...

10°c is still pretty cold, I call 20°C tyres warmed.

You want them around 2.4 when driving around in ambient temps, which involves setting them at around 2.2 Bar when at cold ambient. 1.9 is pretty low, imo!
I was always taught that tyres should be adjusted cold ie ambient at the time although you do need to take into account which part of the day is the "best ambient".

Also, I'm pretty sure it is illegal to run under inflated tyres but not over inflated.

Naturally, they're not going to get up to 20 degrees on a slow 10 mile plod home. But as I'm usually only doing this journey, then when would I ever get them warmer?

I guess you mean 'bar' not 'psi' eh..?

I actually checked my tyre pressures on the way home yesterday. I set them to 32psi front, and 35psi rear. So they weren't stone cold, but it does go to show the differences in pressure after a bit of driving

Yup, Bar - Edited.

I still think 32psi 'warm' is too low?
I have always checked my tyre pressure when cold and during normal conditions for the season (Have experienced 0.3-0.5 bars difference winter compared to summer). Otherwise I follow these "rules" as defined by Michelin:

• Check pressures when the tyres are cold (tyres which have not been used in the last 2 hours or have covered less than 2 miles (3 km) at low speed).
• If tyres are hot when they are checked, add 4 to 5 psi (0.3 bar) to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Re-check the pressures when the tyres are cold.
• Never deflate a hot tyre. (I actually don't know why it's like that?)

Brilliant, just what I was after. Check them when cold
