Greetings

My 2008 e81 118d has the timing chain issue, meaning the whole engine has to be removed just so a little chain can be removed....
the mechanic told me the chain kit comes with the oil pump chain included so he said it makes sense to change it all at the same time

Here are the prices I have been quoted by a garage

£288 (PARTS) for complete chain kit
£400 (LABOUR) Timing chain changed
/OR £600(LABOUR) Timing chain changed AND oil pump chain

Here are my questions....

1) Do the prices sound reasonable?
2) Should I change the oil pump chain as well seen as I'm taking apart the engine already?
3) Does the chain HAVE to be be from the bmw? or is there somewhere cheaper.

It's a massive job, normaly engine out and stripped and reassembled with new parts
And some sundries like sealants and oil and filter / Antifreeze etc

His price is good hold him to it

Ok thank you very much Rob for your quick response and help

Just one more question, do you think paying the extra £200 to get the oil pump chain changed at the same time is worth it?

One of my friends is very good friends with Yaash Motors and has been for many years now. He always gets his work done there.

I hear they do okay work. Personally i'd take mine to a BMW specialist if i was having all that work done.

Will BMW help with this under their quality enhancement ? In effect theyve admitted the provlem
BMW have washed their hands of the whole sorry mess now, no longer interested in helping people with this dodgy engine.

I thought they had started doing chain replacements for free last year. Have they stopped that?
