One of my brakes has been squealing for a few months now. The rear pads were changed just over a year ago, and my front pads and discs were changed about 6 months ago. The noise happens at low speed slow braking just as I'm coming to stop, possibly more when I'm reversing. I don't think it's grit causing the noise.

Any ideas?

You have a couple of DIY options.

Remove, clean, and then refit with a tiny smear of Coppergrease behind them.

If that fails, you can file a chamfer on the lead edges like new pads have:

Interesting! Thanks, I'll probably take it to my local garage to have them do it, I unfortunately don't have the space or equipment to do it myself :/

Please may I suggest Plastilube/Ceratec rather than Copperslip, Twas banned from BMW dealers in the 90s.
I'll be taking it to a guy who used to work for BMW so hopefully he'll know which to use. Also I just remembered that the new front pads did have the chamfer so maybe that narrows it down to one of the rear wheels?

Funny this, I have fitted new discs and pads at the front and mine squeal too. Hope my calipers are ok. If not don't know what kind of cost it'll be to recondition them!?

I took it to a garage, typically it decided not to make any noise while it was in the hands of the mechanic, he checked the calipers and said nothing seemed to be wrong and to bring it straight back if the noise occurred again. I took it home and just as I pulled onto my driveway the squealing was there!

It's just a bit of vibration where the pad has the ability to move a very small amount in the caliper and carrier.

The correct application of 'brake pad paste' as BMW call it just basically stops this vibration being metal on metal contact and puts a layer of softer grease between the pads and carrier.

This is literally all you need, just a quick strip down, clean and re assembly (exactly the same as what you would do if you were changing the pads) and the noise will go away.

I finally got round to doing this over the weekend and as you said, the noise has gone away! Much happier now! :D
