Good afternoon All

Just a quick one, I'm going to add some sound deadening to the underside of the bonnet on my 123d (wouldn't be doing it on the 6cyl !). It is not particularly loud as diesel engines go but think it would benefit from being 'sound deadened'.

I would have thought that BMW would have added it from the factory, given the luxury and efficient nature of the brand, but on the flipside guess it's just millions of bits of foam to manufacture that the majority of people won't even consider !

Interested to see if anybody else has done this and if not I'll keep people posted with the results if it's of interest?

Cheers

Some did come with a sheet of sound deadening under the bonnet as standard, but it really doesn't make much of a difference. Part number 51489141036, plus 5 x 51481915964 to hold it up.

It's not expensive and very lightweight, so there's no harm in experimenting. :)

Thanks for the part numbers, good to know a random smattering came with it seems to be a common them these days ! depends what mood the engineers are in.

Doubt there will be much in the way of difference between OEM & aftermarket insulation but I'll use the 5 clips (thanks Marco) as that will save me the nightmare of finding suitable replacements.
However in terms of the deadening itself I shall use decent quality 30mm aftermarket probably work out cheaper and do a (slightly) better job.

I just fitted the under bonnet sound proofing. Makes a slight difference only.
In the words of Tesco 'every little helps' especially when it comes to less noise as I'm forever on the motorway !!

BMW aren't as bad as SEAT :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:. My SEAT Ibiza was pretty much top of the range but I didn't have pop out rear windows (which should have come as standard on the Sport). My friends SE Ibiza had them and the DAB had them. There's a lot more inconsistencies across Ibiza's!

What aftermarket stuff are you looking at?

I will hunt out the details from where I bought it from. Quite a bit cheaper from Germany :lol2:
Cheaper and better made, can't beat the German's !

I've only ever had Seat's before now apart from a 106 ! swapped my Cupra for the 123d and although the BMW is streets ahead in terms of build quality, in terms of extras it's nowhere near. I had a big chunk of insulation in the engine bay and doors as standard. Funnily enough I removed it from the Ibiza to hear the engine, how times change it did have a great engine note though.

In terms of aftermarket stuff, there is an aptly named website carinsulation.co.uk that supplies a fairly standard setup looks good in terms of the materials so may give it a shot.

I went from a Polo to a Seat and was impressed with the Seat. Such a lovely car to drive, easy to work on and I put lots of Dynamat in it for the Audio build. I didn't have insulation under the engine bay though, same as my BMW, some people have it and some don't. I did love that car!

It's probably just a cheaper version of Dynaliner.

Same as this mate, only takes away some smaller, low tone noises.

It looks nice though :lol2:
You got that right! Personally would look better on anything than a black car like myself, would stand out more.

Have to wait for the next car [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]
