Slight Noise | Engine

Hi guys, I have a 59 plate 1 series, 2 litre petrol. Reg CA59 APK. Good milage for age - 41,000 on clock.

Firstly I'd just like to say thanks to everyone as I was suffering with a very notchy gearbox for a few months (bought the car a year ago) and after research on here, had the redline MTM oil fitted and the gearbox is a dream now compared to how it was. Much more enjoyable to drive.

Now, I've searched as much as possible and I am unsure if its just in my head or not but the engine has a ticking sound to it. I can hear it most in closed areas (mcdonalds drive through for instance) I am unsure if it is the timing chain or not. It does not sound like this at all, is this how the timing chain sounds when on its way out?

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It has had this sound since I bought it, I didn't realise it was any different to any other 1 series until a mate of mine mentioned the noise whilst I parked up. I will take a video ASAP for you and post it so you can check it out but as it is a 59 plate, am I right in saying that the chain should not snap and it is just the annoyance of the noise? It's making me very anxious after reading threads here and if I need to change it I would rather do it now and not ruin the engine. I also believe I just missed the BMW recall which has me :redface: :evil:

Thanks for anyones help. Cheers

Don't think there was a recall for your engine. I have the same car with 46000 on the clock. Also a new owner about 6 weeks now. Funnily enough I thought the same recently when listening to the engine but I haven't pursued it further yet. It's in for an mot and oil change Thursday so I will ask my mechanic, see what he thinks.

Petrol or diesel? Because you've posted a link to a diesel but you're saying your car is a petrol?
The 2.0 Petrol's have a ticking sound, it's pretty normal. Mine does it, ts a 2010 build, and has done it since I bought it almost 40k miles ago (2 years). Now on 107k running smooth as silk.

I've heard others too, sound the same :D
Good to know, we can both breath easy. Cheers guys.

If it's a petrol, the tensioners are known for failing. Usually shows itself on a cold start and it'll sound like a diesel for about 30 seconds. Don't think they are expensive to change but you'd probably know if that was the problem.
I have a 59 plate 3.0 litre petrol 125i and have a slight ticking noise too. Can only hear it if I'm outside the car though.

Pleased to know it's quite common and nothing to worry too much about.
Thanks everyone. Made me feel better, least i'm not the only one! #anxietyover :lol2:
