Filling up with VP once every 5 refuels will help clean out the system but I don't think it's necessary to use it all the time.

Glad you asked this, I've been debating running V Power now due to cost of fuel...
Just hit 6000miles running in ordinary supermarket fuel, would it be worth running down to red light then part fill with V, then a full fill once that's run down? Or would all that not make a difference to the running of car?

From when I had my old 325D I found that v power derv gave a smoother idle. Nothing more to be honest.
No improvement to power (although SuperChips took care of that with a map that added 86bhp and bags of torque!), no improved mpg, nothing really.

So it's a personal call really. If you buy diesel from shell all you are paying extra for is the 'special' detergents. If that's worth it for you then go for it.

I used BP Ultimate in almost every tank for the 6 years I ran my 118d. It ran noticeably smoother on it, especially from cold. Didn't notice a change in power or economy though. I believe it does have more detergents in it and burns cleaner (less soot). I did LOADS of short trips in it and never had one DPF problem.

I'd recommend it and would still be using it now had I not succumbed to my heart wanting to go back to petrol!

Just keep off the low detergent supermarket diesel and you should be fine. All the top fuel manufacturers are competing against each other for quality and reputation so as long as you use Shell, BP or the likes you will be fine.
You can't really improve diesel performance using the highest grade fuel.

I use V Power diesel as much as i can but if i'm not near to a Shell then Tesco diesel will do just fine. I don't feel any difference in my 123d tbh.

I used supermarket diesel in my 120d for about 2 and a half years then the same in my 118d that I've just chopped in and I didn't have any problems. If I had another diesel I'd just use the cheapest I could find. That said I fill the M135i with Vpower, but that's a high performance car!

As others have said.. I've used Bp ultimate diesel in nearly every fill for the last 8 months. Idle is much smoother and quieter compared to normal diesel. Not a great improvement in mpg or power, certainly no worse mpg.
For me it just made the car a bit 'better' to drive. So far (touch wood) I've had no Dpf problems.
Bp ultimate seemed better than Shell's equivalent.

Why not use supermarket fuel? Are the millions of motorists in the uk who do so about to experience a catastrophic engine failure due to their fuel choice? Surely if you're running the car from new for a few years, fuel choice really isn't going to make a blind bit of difference to your experience.

Because I've friends who have had failed injectors, blown turbos and failed DPF's. Both petrol and diesel, different makes of vehicle and dealer serviced. Each time they were advised that the failures were due to the cheaper, lower quality fuel bought from supermarkets and all the vehcles had regulary usef it. All the repairs were covered by warranty so no loss to the owners but bit makes you wonder what the content of detergents and lubricants these fuels have.

I've always filled up with BP. It is my local fuel station anyway but it's what BMW recommends and I get my nectar points too so I'm happy! No BP Ultimate Diesel at my filling station though :(

I used to be a sucker and use shell every fill. Not now. Supposedly it is the extra detergents that they put in. I think @jallen has a good take on this and Matt @roshrambo. But personally now supermarket for me. One point of discussion recently in our house of late my son says there all saying at his work how the local fuel company Rix how when they buy thier fuel how many more mpg they get. Its not as cheap as supermarket fuel about 3p dearer i think and i think its only available in east yorks i may be wrong it may be available nationally but i will try it. Remember this is rip off britain.

Filled up this morning using Vpower for the first time...then ran the car at 2500revs for about 20miles. Now I'm not saying the fuel helped; however the run home saw my mpg rise from 33 up to 44mpg!! Due to the amount of short runs I do daily (it's a 6mth old 118d lci) I've not been overly impressed with the mpg!
