Hey All,

Have a 2013 M135i and am due a few service items soon such as brake fluid and front pads.

I don't have a service pack or similar so was curious to know what others may do with regard to going to an independent BMW specialist.

Is it possible for indy's to add to the service history that now exists within the computer itself? Should I consider going to BMW or are their costs still sky high?

Any info or advice appreciated :D

Cheers,
Evo.

An authorised BMW repair centre will have contact with Germany HQ and be able to update their systems on any service work carried out.

What I would do is find out what needs replacing on the service and source the items yourself online as it will be cheaper this way and then go to your authorised BMW garage and take the parts and ask for labour charge and then do it that way. I saved around £130 doing my first service and I enjoyed learning about what parts are needed and what makes and where they actually go like the pollen filter for example.

Ah okay many thanks for your answer.

UPDATE: Just entered my Reg on a BMW servicing info website and it says that I have a 5 year service pack which is a result (Dealer didn't tell me that when I bought it last year). Looks like it doesn't cover actual brake pads, but I could source them myself and have them fit as as you suggested.

That way at least the service history is maintained on the car itself and is done by BMW.

I guess the other option would be to keep a record of anything done (including receipts) by an indy which would go some way to proving the service history.

Anyway I think I prefer the first option.

Cheers.

The only issue with that is that all the service information is on the Idrive so without that being updated won't it keep saying service is due... Or can local indy's edit this now? (I didn't think they could)

Also assuming you don't have or want BMW warranty as using anyone other than BMW will void this warranty.

I don't consider brakes pads to be part of a cars history personally. I've never rejected a 2nd hand car because there wasn't a record of them being changed. They're consumables like tyres and wiper blades, as long as there's some meat on them and they work perfectly I'm a happy buyer.

Missed engine services = I'm gone like a fart in a hurricane.

That's a good point, I could do the pads myself and I do think it's possible to reset the service indicator yourself (sure I saw a YouTube video for F20)

I do have a warranty on the car up until May this year so don't really want to void that and can use the 5 year service pack (that I didn't realise I had) for the brake fluid change etc.

Thanks guys.

Edit: this video appears to show how it's done:

Any authorised BMW Indy garage will reset drive and ALSO NOTIFY BMW Germany HQ if needed. It's not only a BMW Dealership that can send info to Germany HQ.

Are you sure the brake pads aren't covered with your service plan? Kinda sneaky of BMW not to include it but maybe it's in the Service + Turbo Xtra Ultra plan? :lol2:

Anyway so long as you use quality parts and go to a good quality garage who can Stamp your book and keep receipts of work you should be fine.

Nope the brake pads and disk are not covered, you need "service inclusive plus" for that! I only have "service inclusive" :(

In terms of stamping my book, that was really my original question and problem, in that there isn't a service book anymore and its all on the iDrive. Wasn't sure if anyone else other than BMW can update the service history on the iDrive.

Thanks for your answers guys.

Be a little wary.

If you intend to get the BMW assured extended warranty then you will need full BMWSH.

The original warranty you can get away with 3rd party services - but the extended being an insured product they can and do make sure you've got full BMWSH

How much is the extended warranty I keep hearing so much about?

Depends on mileage, what level of cover you want and how much excess you're willing to pay.

Up to about 60k it's pretty reasonable for cover just on the expensive stuff (engines, gearboxes, turbos, etc).
