Running in period

What's the general practice for running in a new m135i engine? Do they really not need to be serviced until the 20,000/2 year period, not even an oil change?

Cheers

1200 miles before you go hooning and most do an intermediate oil service at 8 or 10k
Is this your long term chariot, or a rental for a couple of years?

Being a motorway car, my CBS wasn't asking for an oil change until 24k! In reality it had one at 1k and another at 10k, then went to the dealer early for a FSH stamp at 20k.
I'm on a 3 year pcp deal so the reality of it all would be that I'll change it in 2/3 years time.
Should I be looking at keeping it under 4000revs whilst running it in?
For the first few hundred miles just don't be stupid. Once the tyres and brakes are scrubbed in then let all hell loose.

You should be looking in the manual as there is a section on this... TMS no more than 4.5k revs for first 1200 miles

Is it acceptable to floor it to 4.5k revs in each gear for the first 1200 miles? I really don't think i could hold back the temptation!
Ask 1000 people and you'll get 1000 different answers in regards to running cars in :lol2:

It's your car!

I didn't ask for full torque for hundreds of miles, make sure it's hot first.
I always make sure my cars are up to temperature before i floor it but i have been a bit naughty before on some of my previous cars.

MP how do you keep it from going full torque if you have autobox? I mean it goes so easily to full torque at least when looking at the iDrive torque thingy :)
Don't put your foot to the carpet, just run it in gently.
IRC it's quite explicit in the BMW M135i manual.

Do not exceed 4500 RPM for first 1200 miles. I'm not in the car but I think it say don't floor it (not the wording of course!) and after 1200 build up steadily.

I know Mercedes say the same. BMW M3 the similar I'm told.

Yet Fiat/Abarth/Alfa Romeo have no running in reference in their manuals from recent experience and dealers have indeed said "no running in required".

Says it for all bmw's that have been in my family.

Maybe that's why those Italian cars are not known for reliability :lol2:

I didn't run mine in. Went back to dealer for what I thought was an issue but it turned out to be just me that had got used to the power.
I ran my current car according to the book and its been brilliant, so Ill be doing the same with the new one. Up to you though. Those who have given it full beans from day 1 dont seem to have had any long term issues so you are probably safe either way.

On my second Abarth 595 currently (soon to jump ship to the m1/2-235i and my dealer said your good to go as soon as it's warm and none of mine put a foot wrong at all so far!

I got told by my dealer that I don't need to worry about a running in period? Also, if the manufacturers say it's that critical not to go over 4.5k revs, then why not just restrict the engine speed output to 4.5k until it's 'run in'?

Dealer said sane to me but they know Jack.

I just scrubbed tyres n brakes in then enjoyed.
I was also told the same. No need to run in.
Weather you do or do not follow the manual on this. I would suggest at a minimum you are careful for about 300 miles. This should be enough to bed the brakes and tyres in.
And also try to avoid running I on the motorway.
