Reversing noise.

When reversing I get quite a load groaning noise which seems to be getting louder the miles I clock up. I have read somewhere it is the rear brake pads touching the discs. Has anyone else come across this problem. Car is a M135i. Trip to the dealers looks like it could be on the cards.

I've had exactly the same experience!

Firstly, new pads and discs under warranty. Noise came back after a few months.

So, another set of rear pads with the "special" new part number. Now the noise has just started to come back again. It's taken longer to come back this time and it's not very loud or very often yet, but it's definitely back.

I'll be interested to hear what they do with yours.
well its in tomorrow, havent managed to video it as it never happens when im with someone (admittedly rare) or when it does im on my own ffs

Anyway im just going to see what they say.

New pads on rear a bit ago so maybe its discs and something rubbing.
Used to get this sometimes on my 135i, a little annoying/embarrassing but didn't seem to be a big issue so never worried about it too much.
My car done this about 4000 miles, happened a few times but seemed to disappear as the miles went on.
Now done 12000 miles and I’d say it hasn’t done it for the last 4 or 5k
To follow up on my post:
. BMW asked the dealer to reproduce the noise (despite my three distinct videos !) - luckily they managed to do it and capture it on video.
. BMW asked specifically to deactivate the PDC to hear the noise separately
. Verdict: change of brake calipers (!), discs and pads (not sure if the pads are again the special numbered ones)
. am brining the car on Nov 14th to get the work done
Hope this helps

Wow, this must be getting very expensive now for BMW - new calipers now plus 3 sets of discs and pads in total!

If doesn't really feel like they've worked out what the problem is does it? Just keep changing more parts and hope it fixes the issue.

Let's hope it works this time.
Update -

Took car in yesterday to Williams and i couldn't replicate the noise myself which is annoying but showed one of the youtube videos and the guy seemed to know what it was. He then said he thinks there is a TSB and i left it with him. Called later to say rear pads and discs will be changed today under warranty. Said he doesnt know why it does the noise but that's what they are told to change.

See how we get on with this once back.
Just got the car back from the workshop. Here we go - to keep you updated: . New rear brake calipers - same part reference as previously . New rear brake discs: same part reference as previously . Rear brake pads with the special part number Therefore the question is: . Is it a technical issue, and if using the same parts it will maybe come back ? . Or they have slightly different machining procedures for the parts, which will solve the issue once and for all ? Hopefully this will now be sorted. And thank you for sharing your own experience: this has helped a lot 👍🙏

Has anyone tried fitting after market rear pads to their M135? The reversing noise has returned on mine after 2 sets of new discs and pads under warranty, the latest of which were the new part number. So as BMW clearly don't have a solution I wondered if there was another way to fix this, maybe ceramic pads?
Good point.
It seems to be a structural issue.
But for some countries, installing pads other than BMW can lead to painful discussions regarding your warranty.
I even suggested my dealer to give me a discount on M Performance discs and pads to avoid endless changes of pads, discs and callipers…
So if you do not have issues with BMW and other than OEM pads: perfect 👍
Mine is only 4 months away from being out of warranty and there is a local BMW independent garage near me so I will go and have a chat with them about it when my warranty is up. I think a change to ceramic pads all round might help as I still find the brakes a bit "grabby" and hard to bring to a gentle slow stop in traffic. The fronts also make a slight groaning noise sometimes at slow speed too.
I’ve fitted red stuff ceramic pads to the front of mine and have the rears waiting to go in.
Although mine hasn’t made the noise for several thousand miles now anyway.

How do you find them compared to OEM? Are they any smoother at low speed?

Only do e a couple of hundred since changing them but I think there’s more initial grab as the brakes feel much better.
Find they manage a nice progressive stop without the awful lunge part the oem ones had.
Mine were about worn out at 12800 miles and these were less than half price of bmw ones and Black Friday deals helped too.

Interesting to see how you get on with them long term. I reckon i will probably go down that route myself.

Trivial point really but can you actually see the red colour of the pads when installed? Just thinking it might look a bit odd against the blue calipers and I'm a bit OCD about that sort of thing!

If you look through the wheels between the caliper and the inside of the wheel you can see 2 little red lugs but only if you look for them.

I quite like the look of the red bits against the blue calipers😁

I’m on my 2nd set of rear pads, sensors and discs now and the reversing noise has returned. It’s much worse when it’s wet as opposed to a dry day but even on a dry day it was doing it all day earlier this week. Will be ringing up again tomorrow to get it booked in again. It is becoming a joke now.
Mine went in today for some unrelated work and I told them about the groaning from the rear. BMW now state that this is normal and the service bloke let me read the stuff on the system.

It reads as if it’s caused by UK weather. Very odd and I told him on an 8 month car I expect better.
What tosh, do we have some kind of magic weather somehow? Jeez that's really bottom of the barrel cr*p I'd expect from a back street garage...
