Reversing noise.

When reversing I get quite a load groaning noise which seems to be getting louder the miles I clock up. I have read somewhere it is the rear brake pads touching the discs. Has anyone else come across this problem. Car is a M135i. Trip to the dealers looks like it could be on the cards.

I think we have this on the 2GC but a loud whining noise again only in reverse - a bit like squeaky brake but louder. It's done it since day one as like yours is getting louder with more miles - it's booked in but not for another couple of weeks due to limited bookings being taken currently.
Sounds like the same problem how strange. I think I will get mine booked in as well. Thanks for the reply 👍.
I have exactly this on my M135i, and it's been getting louder.

The issue I have is that it's intermittent and the last time I took it to the dealer they couldn't replicate the fault.

Need to make a decent video of it to show them!
Make a video good idea 😀
I also get this too very occasionally though, mainly for me when its wet/damp though.
I haven't bothered to contact the dealer yet as its way too hard to replicate and hardly does it.
The noise was definitely worse today. It was raining all day today as well .Something to take notice of to see if its worse in the wet ?
Mine does it, more so when it's been wet, could it be brake pads rubbing on the disc if dirt or grit has got in somehow?? Seems odd it doesn't do it all the time,..
Does it stop if you lightly press the brake while it's making the noise??
My old Mk7 golf used to make a weird noise in the wet similar to that described, it turned out to be the rubber CV boots rubbing against themselves and was cured by spraying some silicone lube on them, as the M135i has boots on the rear also it may be worth a look, it was a harsh creaking sound, like an old wooden ship perhaps! If you imagine what a couple of pieces of wet rubber might sound like if rubbed together under pressure, it wasn't immediately obvious it wasn't metal, if anyone has a recording or video of it I'd be able to tell you if it's the same sound. 👍
Video was a great idea and here you go from this morning. Excuse the camera work as I got my daughter to hold the phone

Mine also does this very occasionally. Ironically it hadn't done so for about 3 months and then did yesterday for about 2 seconds. It's not enough to make me take it in outside of it being in for a service as it happens so rarely.
Mine makes this noise, but only when reversing between half and full lock and specifically when going over a slight camber.

I'd say it's brake noise.

Definitely not the CV boot noise I've previously heard, brake pads can and do move in the calliper when changing direction so may be related to that, does pressing the brake lightly while the noise is being made stop it??

I think is does actually but as soon as you come off the pedal the noise returns - also think this is more so between half and full lock rather than straight on reverse however will try and take more notice
Mine does this occasionally, it brake noise, I'm 99% sure. Harmless but embarrassing 😂 At least it doesn't do it going forward...

That does seem to point to it being related to the front brakes then, it is most likely pad movement which is nothing to worry about and will stop after a while.
Mine also has made this noise a few times in the last couple of weeks, only when turning the steering to about half lock and further. At first I thought it was due to it standing for a while (as it happened firstly when reversing out of driveway), but the noise was also there after having driven for about 10 miles and then reversed into a parking space.

What is not fully apparent is if it is the rear or front brakes making the noise? With the 4 pistons on the front, and floating calipers on the back, it may point to the front ones being the source of the noise with the pistons holding the pads more firmly against the disc? And when the reversed direction of the brakes, coupled with the level of steering lock, is causing the pads to 'catch' at the lower speed and set of the vibration, which dissipates after a few seconds of running in the opposite direction from the norm?

I think the nature of the M Sport brakes being a little bit grabby at low speed could be the reason behind it.
Wonder if it could also be related to the brake drying feature?
Yep that's the noise mine makes as well good video. As others have mentioned always seems to do it with some lock applied. It is quite embarrassing when your reversing your virtually brand new car and its groaning at everybody. :lol2:
