Having had a remap done by DMS just before Christmas that had the car running at 357bhp I went ahead with an OTA update from bmw which in turn wiped the map from the car DMS look after you for such scenarios so I will be making my way down to their HQ on Saturday for a reflash. I Shal post up figures when complete and hopefully return with more than before as I've since fitted an eventuri intake

Hi Boydy. Interested to learn about your reasons for going for DMS vs say TDI tuning? Also, did BMW notice the remap or mention it to you? I'm weighing up both options but TDI Tuning seem to believe their box isn't identifiable which is a major pro if true, particularly as our cars often in warranty still.

Another concern I have is around safety parameters. It seems the Aisin gearbox for M135ix has a max tolerance of 500nm but every remap / box seems to take it over this threshold. Have you experienced any issues or all plain sailing so far?

Appreciate chips can often be optimistic in their claims. Can you actually feel a significant difference with DMS remap vs stock? Imagine it's more pronounced now the map has been wiped.

Cheers

Having done some researching after purchasing the car I found DMS to be more appealing than the tuning box on offer. The tuner can adjust to suit aswell as notice any issues that the car could have, I'm fairly certain the tuning box is just trickery and fools a few parameters.

The update was just an over the air update and not physically in at bmw, also the car is nearing end of the warranty period and tbh having come from remapped 335d the m135 was just seriously lacking. In terms of noticing a difference I can honestly say it's night and day, this car should have been similarly powered from factory.

Kinda weird that any update to the idrive system would then over write the ecu. I cannot recall this occuring at all with any remaps on any vehicle.

Tuning boxes are far more sophisticated than they were and now do monitor sensors to ensure the correct parameters are set, they would definitely not be over written by any update, can be removed at any time and transferred from one vehicle to another. Plus custom maps are also sometimes available.

Having said that they cannot compete with an expert mapper using a dyno to expertly remap a engine. That comes at a price of course.

Like anything there are cowboy companies out there who offer remaps that are just generic ones downloaded from the interweb..

Good to hear the remap worked out for you. I hadn’t really considered DMS before but called following your post and they said for my model year some code hasn’t been cracked (can’t recall exact terminology). They anticipate 21+ plate cars to be available for the remap within a couple of months, so hopefully I can get this done with them before Xmas 🤞👌

I used DMS for a 330d and my current X3 M40i ... service excellent. They took my car they said from 360hp to 459hp. I took it to Surrey Rolling Road and it showed 440hp so not too far off DMS claim (which is actually 450hp, not what mine showed on their rollers).

As to tuning boxes vs maps ... apart from any figures they may or may not produce BMW can see the results of the map in stored data that can't be erased ... so map at your own risk, whether that be by map or box. BMW see the max torque and boost pressure ... if they hook the car up properly. A normal service won't show it but if you take it in for a blown gearbox etc, they will look and discover ! Mine was at end of warranty which I didn't extend so have no worries in the respect of them knowing ... and trust DMS not to take a car too far.

Their map on my X3 is very smooth and smoother than the MG Flasher map I had on it before FWIW. I also put xHP on it to make sure the gearbox didn't try and pull back on torque.

It's funny; every time I take my car in for a service, I ask them not to update the i-drive, (I have heard that some pre-PPF's can suffer from power reduction due to the new software, which was to be installed to limit emissions). Anyway, my dealership are convinced the car has been mapped and that I don't want the map erasing during the update. This proves the point, that they do not know if a car is mapped under normal servicing conditions.

It doesn't prove the point at all - it's your anecdotal evidence and conclusion.

BMW tuners such as Aaron Reeve will tell you that when plugged into the latest version of ISTA it will flag a tune or abnormal parameters.

Dealers don't care if your car is tuned as long as they get paid for the work they do (they may care if you PX it). BMW authorise factory warranty claims and they definitely do care.

They definitely know Simon. It's just a case of whether they check the correct parameters (and sometimes it can even flag up itself) - my guess would be they've not bothered to plug your car in; you've nothing to hide anyway but they don't know that for sure without diagnostics. Worth a read of Boydy's thread Heads Up

After that it's a case of whether they mention it to you or not. Some will, some won't. They don't need to if your car doesn't have a warranty - it's not relevant if you don't ask them to fix something!

With Audi's for example, if there is a engine or transmission warranty claim then they look for for a remap and if they find one then it flags a TD1 Is Revo Software Undetectable? - Revo But any remap is detectable as the checksum size of the map will usually differ from standard...

Just my 10p worth, cannot fault DMS! Carried out some work on my car & what a team they are. Only things I’ve got fitted to mine performance wise is the remus exhaust. Running 380bhp now which is hella fun!

Made a brilliant car that bit better! Shifts are snappier, launch is awesome fun! It’s just a shame I work abroad and the car is in the UK. Only get to drive it for a week every 3 months but it’s good to come home too!
