I've read on the forum that I could expect the 130's water pump to fail around 100,000 miles. Since I'm now at 95k I had considered just getting it replaced before it fails, however several people have suggested that it's very likely that error codes would be recorded prior to it's ultimate failure.

What are the options for obtaining these error codes and are some methods better than others? I've seen people mention a cable from cable shack, are these any better than the wifi/bluetooth obd devices/software?

Best thing I've used is the carly app. I've got INPA and a cable from cableshack but the carly app is much more user friendly and more comprehensive in my experience.

I believe the fault code people talk about is the pump communication error code but don't know what it is off the top of my head.

I only started scanning for fault codes with inpa AFTER my water pump failed.

Fault for my water pump failure was in the DME/DDE:
2E84
2E82

these water pump faults are not displayed in the cluster.
Was there a timestamp on the error log so you could tell how long before the failure the error message was produced?

Good question. I dont remember seeing a time stamp or odo reading for those errors. But ive seen that the SRS faults are recorded that way (odo reading)

My 130i is on 123k with no signs of water pump failure (touches wood) so you could have a while before you need to worry?

That's pretty good going, certainly makes me think I should hold off. Having said that I'm not keen on getting stranded and if I've still got it in another 95k miles it won't have served badly. Still, if the issue can be reliably detected then that makes it an easy decision.

You can view the history log via a cable, laptop and INPA. It tells you fault code, German description and mileage it occurred at.
This sounds like a good solution. Does anyone know if INPA would work with one of the wireless obd devices or is it cable only?

You could test the waterpump by doing the bleed procedure:
put key in,
press start button without the brake/clutch,
turn aircon the highest temp and lowest fan setting,
press and hold the accelerator pedal for 10 secs.

You should hear the water pump activating and running on and off for around 12mins.

I recommend having a battery charger to avoid draining the battery doing this procedure.

I did see that somewhere although I'm not sure how this would establish if it was near failure? Would it make a different sound if it was on its last legs?

Does anyone know if there's any down side getting an £11 K+D-CAN cable off ebay versus the £42 one from cable shack?

From what I read in my research on the waterpump failure, it's been suggested it is the chip/electrics inside the pump that fails rather than the mechanical operation so the bleed procedure may not give you the whole picture.

Check the ebay cable comes with the software.

I did a search for the software earlier and version 5.1 of inpa is available to download. Is there any other software that would be useful?
