Hello all,

2010 1 Series M Sport with Auto Lights. I just got back from seeing Jack @ Royal Steering Wheels who fitted a new steering wheel for me, disconnected the battery, swapped the wheel over and connected the battery again. Prior to going to see him, I had coming home lights that would fade on, on unlock and fade off, on lock when they were set to the auto position which has now gone and doesn't work anymore. I told him this, all the connections were double checked and everything was fine. I then asked him what could it be but he says he's not sure, could be coding?

The first thing I did was check to see if it was still selected in the BC Menu which it was, as shown below (I'm pretty sure this does the lights on lock and unlock?):

Initially I thought it could be a coding thing, where previously coded things could have been lost after the battery was disconnected but I have my front sidelights to always be on and that works fine. The puddle lights on the doors still fade on and off on unlock and lock. The auto lights still work fine. Steering controls are all good. The only thing that has stopped working is the front & rear lights fading on and off after unlock and lock. The lights are left in the auto position for the fade on/off as well and worked before seeing Jack but they don't now.

Any ideas?

Could it be a coding issue? If it is coding, is there anyone in the NW London area or London area that does coding that can see if it needs coding again?

Is the battery recent / known to be healthy? I wonder if disconnecting it spooked the Intelligent Battery Sensor??

I'd be inclined to fully charge it via the poles under the bonnet, see if that helps?

I'd say it's healthy yes, but in terms of recent, I don't think it's been changed since the car was built in 2010. I certainly haven't changed it in the 2/3 years of ownership. But I'm going to upgrade it for the ICE install soon (approx 2 months as that's when I'll be able to afford it).

I'll try and borrow a charger to see if that helps, I just find it really strange how it was working before and now it isn't but everything seems to be fine, just the sidelights come on, on unlock has gone, but the door puddle lights are fine. It is set correctly in the BC menu though right?

Thanks for your reply dude.

Don't worry about it. Drive the car and they'll come back.

It's to do with the battery charge, the car will only do it if it thinks the battery is sufficiently charged and unplugging and re connecting the battery will just have confused it.

After a 45-50 minute drive back from Jacks, I got home and she was doing the same. Went to Ikea with my dad, unlocked the car to show him the wheel, door puddle lights came on the but the front and rear sidelights didn't come on.

We got home, bear in mind my car wasn't driven, she was sat on the drive, I come home, unlock my car to see if they worked and lo and behold, they work, fade on, fade off, I need to double check that it works in the morning but so far so good. Looks like it sorted itself out.

Thanks bud!

Yeah I do, when I put the key in the slot and press start/stop so the ignition comes on. But I've had that since I put my aftermarket stereo in. I've got the wrong Stalk Control in there. Need to change it for CTSBM009.2

General question, how comes only the front and rear sidelights didn't work but the door puddle lights still worked? Shouldn't all of them stop working in terms of the coming home function? Just thought it was strange that the front and rear sidelights lost the function but the door puddle lights still had them?

When I fitted my custom depos I occasionally get that. When I say unlock the car about 10 times if I do t start it the side lights now angel eyes don't come on but door handle lights do. And then once I get in car and start it. I get !. But after that it's fine again. Weird but I thought that it was down to the LEDs in the rings.

May be its as some one said. battery not as good as it use to be. So like a safe mode so you don't drain to much out of battery.

I suspect it's trying to power save. LED puddle lights are only about a Watt, but headlights are 55w. You might find your rear screen demister gets a little lacklustre too?

Leave a battery a while and the surface charge will increase naturally.
