Hi Guys,

so i need two new fronts for my 320d. 225/40/19 runflat oem pirelli p-zeros.

Now its not a m135i so performance isnt up there its my diesel work horse (still an m sport etc). hence never changed from runflats.

Now i have always on every car kept same make all round, would you guys stick with the pirellis on fronts to match rears or change to other runflats if cheaper?

Do a lot of mway miles and around town for work so no ditch finders!

If i stick with pirellis as they been great to be fair, wheres best to get them?

Also if i was to change, what would you get and where from?

Appreciate all the help in advance!

Thanks

I get my tyres from oponeo.co.uk, but you have to factor in fitting cost too. I would get fitted prices from some local places (blackcircles, mytyres, kwikfit, etc) and see if it is more cost effective to buy tyres only or buy tyres and fitting in one.

Eventtyres can do decent prices fitted. Mobile fitting service.

I buy my tyres from Oponeo as they work out the cheapest and get them fitted by Southall Discount Tyres at about £40 a set. Fully balanced and ready to go.

I always match my tyres across all 4 corners. You shouldn't mix runflat and non runflat.

Interesting you say shouldn't mix and match Run flats and None-Runflats ..... I spoke to two independant garages one a prestige specialist and the other a performance Tuner and then BMW Williams and all three said it doesnt matter and you wont notice if runflats on the rears and none run flats on the front as long as axles match.

Ill give oponeo a look and see how much they are charging.

Thanks

I would never mix runflats and non runflats. Marco_Polo would also say the same if I'm not mistaken as would a few people on here.

What I generally do is try and match makes/models on all 4 corners, I.e. Hankook Ventus S1 Evo K107's on the fronts and rears, but where this is not possible due to the manufacturer not making specific models of tyre in specific sizes I will still stick to the same brand and model/range, I.e. Hankook Ventus S1 Evo K107's on the front and Hankook Ventus S1 Evo K110's on the rear.

I try to brand match across the whole car, at the very least brand/range match across axles. I wouldn't put Hankook on the front left and then Falken on the front right for example.

I have pirelli p zeros on the rears and on fronts but was going to change both fronts to something else as these tyres are now over 400 fitted. so was looking at other options hence rang BMW.

I wouldnst normal scrimp on tyres and dont intend on buying ditch finders but after having surgery and loosing 3 weeks work and the wife on mat leave added to a flooded kitchen, funds are a little tight. I was budgeting around 300 fitted ideally.

Event Tyres can do good prices on fitted tyres, they're mobile as well, so they will come to you. Try and avoid mixing runflats and non runflats. At least match brands/model across the axle.

Different handling characteristics between the two types of tyres. The sidewalls are totally stiff on the runflats with no give. Non runflats will give a little sideways as well as up and down.

Its your only contact with the road - don't compromise!

Not recommended by all these people....... Cant find anyone who will recommend it in writing :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

Ill have a read of these thank you.

So why would BMW themselves and other garages all say its fine? (aside from wanting a sale, i didnt indicate it was a cost decision as i never do just asked opinions).

So then my next question, does it matter if i have runflats on all 4 corners but pirelli on rears and say Michelin on fronts?

Definitely not a good idea to mixing runflats with normal tyres, regardless if they are matched on the axle.
Can you elaborate why?

Im genuinely a bit confused here as BMW and others all saying not an issue.

Its a 320d btw if that matters
Completely different handling characteristics, normal tyres offer far better grip than runflats and there is more movement in the sidewalls. My friend said his car felt very unsettled with mixed pairs, why would you want to compromise the only thing that's keeping you in contact with the road?

That aside, I got 4 decent tyres for the same price as 2 runflats. Can always sell the 2 runflats that have plenty of tread left. It's a no brainer!

EDIT: Beaten to it :)

No that wouldn't matter. I've done it myself.

As to the other question - I honestly don't know why they would go against manufacturers recommendations. Perhaps lack of knowledge?

If the manufacturer is not recommending it then it will probably be an added risk for your insurance company should the worst ever happen. You've effectively gone against (tyre) manufacturers recommendations and that gives them a get out clause.

Have a look at Camskill for tyres as well. They don't have a fitting service but are pretty good value.

If you are sticking with runflats it wouldn't matter what brand you had on the front and back as long as they were runflats.

Hmm so now I am tempted to try and sell the other two but for the hassle of it im not sure its worth it??

I think I may just investigate other costs of run flats and keep the run flats all round as better safe than sorry.

Can anyone recommend any others than pirelli p zeros in these sizes?

225/40/19 89Y run flat.

Guys, this is really helpful and I appreciate it. Thank you.

Mixing different brands is fine, mixing different types is not :)
