Hi all,

Maybe a silly question but where is the button in the car to open to boot?

Thanks

In the E87 at least, there isn't one (at least not in mine) but I think you can retrofit a button?
There isn't one. Lift the bmw badge.
Oh, ok.

It's the E82 coupe.

Thought there might have been.

Thanks anyway.

A retrofit can be done on the E46 as shown here:

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

This might be able to be done on the 1 Series as well?

You can press the button on the key fob which pops the boot. Im not sure if that works whilst the key fob is in the actual dash. Or, from outside, you can press up above the number plate to pop the boot.

In some cars you need to unlock the car first, then press the boot button to unlock the boot but this is pointless on the E87 as you still need to lift the handle to lift it up. Might work better on the E88/E82, just lift the boot lid.
Yeah for me to open the boot, the car needs to be unlocked. And it doesn't work if the key is in the ignition either.

If your car is unlocked (unless your car is coded to only unlock the drivers door on 1 button press and the rest of the car on 2 button presses - which can you do through the BC menu IIRC) then the boot will be unlocked regardless of whether the key is in the ignition or not, car running or not, until you lock the car again with the fob or the button on the dash. My car unlocks all doors on one button press and then auto locks when I go over 10mph. If I then want to open the boot with the car still running and key in the dash, I then need to press the unlock button on the dash which will unlock everything. Soon as I turn the car off, press the key to take it out, everything unlocks until I lock it again off the fob.

Follow me or have I lost you?

No that all makes sense. Thank you for that

I assume your E82 would work along the same principles unless coded otherwise or the BC menu has been changed :). I need to look into that boot button retrofit though and see if it's possible on the 1 Series.

Yeah I'm sure it's set to open all doors.

I don't think I'd go to the trouble of retrofitting a button. I think it'd be more hassle than it's worth.
Whilst we're on the topic of boot button... What is the point of the button on the key fob? It doesn't actually open the boot fully...

Agreed, seems completely pointless to me with a hatchback. Guess it might be different on coupe/convertible.
I don't really see the point of it either on the coupe to be honest.

Probably just so the key does have a boot button like most others.
Unless you do the mod and add a couple of springs to the gas pistons that take the weight. Then when it pops, it also lifts - the springs start it moving, and the pistons keep it going until its all the way up. I find it handy getting a bag of cement in without having to put it down, open the boot, and pick it up again (or whatever your weekly shop includes).

Yeah I can imagine it being really useful for things like that.

tbh i only ever use the button on the fob to pop the boot on my coupe. Your right, it doesnt open the boot up fully, but it pops it open, so if you have your arms full of shopping you just need to push the boot up slightly to get it fully open, rather than put all your shopping down and reach under and try and press the release button.
