Hi, does anybody know if the QE PDF on page 1 is the most up to date? I have had the upper timing chain and tensioner replaced by Arden BMW but now the car sounds worse than before it went in!! I am being told it may be the lower timing chain or the balance shafts.

However I have read the QE PDF and it says that both timing chains must be replaced if extension is found. I have argued this with Arden BMW and they are telling me that this QE PDF is out of date and they only had to change the upper one chain. :?

My brother has collected his 118d Auto after the Quality Enhancement and now it has a nasty vibration appearing to come from " a centre point under the windscreen" and relates to engine speed.

I'm hoping it's a badly fitted engine acoustic cover rather than anything major. The garage are allegedly testing the car against another similar vehicle!

Picked mine up from Berry Chiswick today. They only replaced the Tensioner, even though I was originally told that due to the cars mileage (101k) at the very least, the top chain would have to be replaced. I was expecting/hoping all chains as well as the tensioner would be replaced, especially considering my car was with them for a full two weeks.

As with a number of people, I had the usual spiel, 'everything tested fine and was within our recommended limits'. I can't say I'm happy or comfortable with what has been done, as someone else has mentioned, it feels a little like a ticking time-bomb. I tried to express my concerns and discomfort but was basically told that there was little else that they could do and to take it up with BMW directly (0800 408 9340) if I had any more concerns, which I plan to do.

To make things worse, after getting home tonight I popped the bonnet to listen out for any untoward noises while the engine was hot and running and unfortunately, I can here a obvious ticking noise coming from the area of the chains and in addition I can also see excessive vibration from the engine, not good!

I have now written to BMW customer services, will update once I receive a reply.

I hope the rest of you reading this have more luck!

Figured I'd post a reply here as well. I can't exactly help you but I am in a very similar place.

I own a 520d (yes this isn't my forum :D) with an N47 engine just like yours. I started hearing a very slight chain-like noise when revving the engine to roughly 1500-2000rpm. To hear it, I had to turn the air ventilation off entirely, and drive at slow speeds, while keeping the revs constant.

I took the car to the dealers and the took it in under a PUMA (timing chain recall). They had the car for a day, called me and told me it was ready.
I was expecting a 3 day job, so I was pretty surprised. When I got the car back, I was told that they only replaced the tensioner. When they measured the chain, the elongation was very minimal, so the chain didn't need replacing.

Having the car back, I can still hear the exact same "whooshing" chain sound when driving at slow speeds (1st, 2nd or 3rd gear. In 4th, 5th and 6th gear the noise is completely gone, or inaudible.).

For me personally nothing has changed. The sound is still there and BMW assured me it was normal.
I still feel very uneasy about driving the car. It just feels uncomfortable when I drive it, because of all the stories I've read online about this engine model.

Any other people with similar experiences? I'm very curious to hear from people who have had the chain replaced. Whether they still hear the same sounds or not. It could just be the chain gliding over the guides. But I would really like to be sure :).

It doesn't sound like the horror sounds on youtube. It's just a relatively faint whistle you can hear when driving slowly in lower gears.
But with all the on-going drama with these engines, it always remains a worry for me.

Thanks!

I ran to see if my 2008 118D was affected, basically Sytner Leicester didn't even acknowledge there was a recall, seems they are just fobbing people off.

Who can i call to check as i don't want to be stuck with a ÂŁ4000 bill in a few years

Hope someone can help me with this, its my first BMW and could do with some information.

Have you tried any non-Syntner BMW dealers?

I just got off the phone to sytner and enquired about them looking at my n47 re: potential timing chain.

They asked for my reg and confirmed it was on the recall list and advised that replacement parts had to be fitted even if they have to replace everything it will be free of charge apparently, though I have to pay approx ÂŁ9 a day insurance for the replacement car.

Its nice to have the peace of mind as the sound of the chain is always in your mind! lol

A BMW dealer, who had worked on my car before (a 69K 2007 118D), called me in early August telling me about the recall - otherwise I would have had no idea, I hadn't heard about it. Anyway, it went in a couple of weeks ago and it needed the works - engine out and chains and tensioner replaced, 2 days work. I paid a little bit for enhanced insurance on the courtesy car but otherwise the bill went to BMW. The car has been running absolutely fine since. Having said that, it might cost me significant money, as the courtesy car was a new model 1 series and that has set me thinking...

I've been told they replaced tensioner and top chain (fuel pump to camshaft) they said the system reported no stretching on the bottom chain so they are putting back together.

Hello everyone,
Several months ago i took my car in for the QE. They only replaced a tensioner. Stretching on the chain was minimal and it did not need replacing. This made sense as i had the chains, tensioners, guides, camshaft etc changed under warranty in 2013. Since then i have done 30.000 miles. Lately when i park next to a wall (cold engine) i have noticed the ticking noise (tsik tsik tsik) about once every second. I can also hear the whistling noise when the engine is warm.
Seeing as so much work has been done on this car PLUS the QE, why is the ticking back?
And seeing as all the work was done post 2013, could it still snap? Or do they just become noisy?
Anyone else have any input after their Qe?

Hi, we had a 118d M sport new in March 2008, in May 2013 at 69,000 miles the car just stopped, full main dealer service history all the way through. Greenbower BMW had it back, upshot was full engine rebuild, BMW supplied all parts and 60% of the labour. Never the less we had a bill of over ÂŁ2100.

At the time I argued with BM that the car was not fit for purpose as it had an inherent fault, this is the email response I had from them in June 2013...

]Thank you for your email dated June 9, 2013, confirming that you have not received a response to your previous email dated May 29, 2013. I would like to apologise that you have not yet received a response and I can confirm that this will be investigated internally. I have noted your belief that the timing chain on your vehicle has an inherent fault and that a recall should have been issued.

I can confirm that we monitor all repairs and parts replaced within our dealer network to identify any trends that appear. We may then release a recall or quality enhancement where appropriate. I have consulted our records and I can advise that we have no identified trend with the timing chain on your vehicle. With this in mind, we have no current plans to contact our customers in relation to this matter.

I understand that you remain disappointed with the rectification charges involved. I can advise that as no valid BMW warranty has been in place on your vehicle since March 30, 2011, we have no obligation to assist with such a cost as this would be the sole responsibility of the vehicle owner. We may however, review cases in accordance with our goodwill policy. In order for us to do so, we must review certain criteria which include the vehicle's age, mileage and service history. I have reviewed your case and it is with regret that our position will remain the same, as we would not ordinarily provide as much assistance as we have, based on the vehicle's age and mileage.

In closing, once again I am sorry that you have had cause to contact us, however, I trust that this response has clarified our position on this matter.
Yours sincerely,

Since there has now been a recall due to the faulty timing chain, has anyone had any reimbursement from BM for outlay on failed cars?

Hi Penmoel,

Bearing in mind the QE recall covers all affected vehicles irrespective of service history, had my 2007 123D recently done for free & it has only ever had 1 stamp in the book post PDI as I do my own servicing.

As long as your vehicle would've been recalled I would pen a nicely worded letter to BMW customer services including you're previous correspondence stating that there obviously was an issue when you paid for yours to be done and asking them to consider reimbursement as an act of goodwill. Point out you had a full service history at the time and that they are recalling cars without any history such as mine.

If they refuse threaten small claims court action, it's cheap and I am 95% certain they will cave in once you start.
Just make the first letter very pleasant as if you file for court it makes your case look better.

Good luck.

Hi this is my first bmw (320d f30 62 plate) and first post on here. Hello guys and gals. My car has covered 64000 and has the timing chain noise I went to bmw and and they confirmed it is the timing chain that is noisey! But said there chief machanic has changed all parts on other cars with the same noise and never cured it! The car is 3 months out of warranty and I don't want to pay a fortune for something that doesn't need it but I'm still worried about a failure! Should I be worried or not as I've read the original post saying they get noisey but won't snap!? Any advise would be great cheers

Had mine in at Bishops Stortford BMW on the 4th Jan, only replaced the tensioner but didn't give me any details on the condition of the chain but i assume it was within tolerance otherwise they would have flagged it with me. However the engine beforehand wasn't noisey at all, i couldn't hear the chain and since I've had the car back, all i can hear is the chain, its almost as loud as idle. Now this does worry me and I will be calling BMW however its very interesting that BMW is ending the recall, obviously wasn't making much of a difference... worrying or its just a noisey engine full stop. Its a shame because BMW seem to be great at making bulletproof 6 cyl engines, why does it not transfer to the 4 cyl?

Anyone else noticed a noiser chain after the QE?

EDIT: Wow, I just realised how lucky I was booking it in before the new year, now BMW shows all recalls as 'completed'. Crazy..

yes mine was a lot more noisy after the work they did

Hello!

I've been a lurker on this forum for quite some time but figured it was time to create an account.

Anyway. I also had a noise timing chain on my N47. My car is a 120d 2009 model with only 30,000 miles. Mine sounded similar to the engine in this video:
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However! This past weekend was the first time I changed the oil in my car; I've only had it since November and the previous owner took it in at 24,000 miles in June of last year. Well after changing the oil the noise has pretty much gone, no more stressful metallic noises coming from the engine bay.

I'm not sure what oil BMW puts in their cars but I used Mobil 1 ESP 5w/30 and I didn't change the oil filter.

If you've got a noisy engine then try changing the oil, it might help. Obviously this wont fix peoples chains, but more regular oil changes can only be a good thing.

Cheers

Yes, you really should change your engine oil (and the filter..!) each year or 9000 miles if you want to look after your engine.
