I'm having some lighting issues on my MY06 BMW E87 130i Sport, not sure if there is a connection between them all?

* Light switch on Automatic mode and the headlights are always on - bright sunny day and it's still automatically turning the headlights on. I'd assume that there is a sensor that detects the outside light somewhere? Where is this located so I can check it's clean and clear? Perhaps it's failed and stuck on detecting dark...

* Day time running lights are turned on on the instrument cluster settings, but there is nothing illuminating at the front of the vehicle.




* Bulb of exterior lighting system failed Check fault error message. I've checked park lights/halos, low beam, high beam, indicators/hazards, stop and tail lights, and reverse lights - all work fine. Read fault codes with BimmerLink and no errors listed. I note that the low beam, high beam and rear fog lights have their own different Check fault which reduces the possibilities.






* Drivers side Halo light is very faint. Perhaps an opportunity to upgrade them? What the recommended replacement brand?

I would get my battery checked in the first instance. Toothpaste is good for polishing headlights!

You could try cc-id just in case gives any extra info re the bulb and you don't mention whether you have checked the bulbs for the reg plate. Also, If you have done the mod to led for those, you might find there are two leds in each light, one may be at fault but not obvious since the other remains lit.

Battery checks out well. I note that it's coded as 70AH though. Checking the battery label and there is no AH or RC rating, just 675CCA. What's the go with battery coding for unknown AH or based on CCA? A Google search indicates dividing the CCA by 7.5 to get AH. In this case it would be 90AH.
What is the effect of under or over rating the installed battery?

Yep, agreed. I usually use some Colgate or OralB for the final polish after some high grade wet and dry rubbing!

This was brilliant, thank you. Silly me had not gotten down low enough to check the licence plate lights - they are the blow out. But learning about the CC-ID feature is great! It came back with 371 for the reverse lights which confirmed the now known... Thank you.

Re the halos, it's a bit weird for halogen bulbs to go dim so it could be worth swapping the bulbs before spending money on a fancy set. If the dim side stays dim with the bulb from the bright side, the bulbs aren't the issue.

Unless you're happy to spend the money for Lux, just experiment with eBay specials that have a return policy. Up to the £200 name brands like Lux, Weisslicht etc., pretty much everything on the market are all coming from the same production line in China with different brand names and different promises. You could buy them under one name for £100 and another for £10 and they'll be identical even down to the packaging. Been there, done that!
