Just out of curiosity does anyone know when BMW change their model years?

Every manufacturer changes their model year at least once a year, sometimes more. i.e. a current car could be a MY23, last years would be MY22 and I would assume at somepoint later this year it will change to MY24. Sometimes during these changes they might add a feature as standard, remove something or add/remove a colour, just small changes and not like an LCI.No exact timeframe. The last MY change was July 2022 which was MY23 (iDrive 8 Change)
I can imagine iDrive 8.5 might come into play at some point in production changes, but nobody knows and your best bet is to also keep an eye on the 3 series forums as they get released quicker than the 2 series.
But no set in stone date to when it gets updated for these minor changes as we saw last year with the launch of iDrive 8 from iDrive 7. Some people got unlucky/lucky with missing out on iDrive 8 as their car was built just before.

3 series LCI cam out Septemberish last year.
My 340i is clased as MY23 and that was built in July 22

They have updated the configurator to have frozen grey now, Also the shark fin design on the configurator has finally changed to match current cars.
No other changes from what I can see other than they now properley list heads up display in the Tech Pack.
