Good morning all,

So I've just gone to get in my car this morning (55 130i with 55k on the clock with fbmwsh), and as soon as I start it up the engine sounds weird and its making the car wobble slightly when just sat idling. I drive round the corner and it sounds like there's a cylinder not firing (I think), next thing the engine management light comes on on the dashboard, drive round the corner and park up.

That is literally all the information I have right now as I need to get to work and I'll have to call the rac out later, and then get it to a "warranty approved garage" (makes me feel very uneasy). Do any of you gurus have any idea what it might be?

I thought these engines were meant to be bullet proof!?

Cheers
Sam

I had something like this and it turned out to be "a broken wire" that was stopping the cylinder firing.

Thing sounded and drove like a tractor on 5 cylinders.

Can you read the codes?
No I don't have a scanner :/. Yeah out sounds like a cross between a tractor and an old school American v8.

I seriously hope it's a wire.

The engines are bullet proof, the components on the other hand are not, hope it is a wire, could be a coil pack, if it's only one pack they will have to change all 6, due to changing the part no on them and you can't just change one which as you have warranty is fine, otherwise it would be a 1200£ hole I'm your pocket

Turns out my warranty ran out two days ago...

I live in Manchester, where do you recommend getting it in? Dealer or a decent BMW garage like Darren wood?
Got anyone local to you that can read the codes with a carly app? I don't think it's going to be much more than a set of coils and plugs which shouldn't cost more than £200 ish.

Take it to a specalist. No point in taking a car that old to a dealer to be shafted.

Ok thanks for the advice. I have no idea to be honest if there's someone near by that can read codes.

I'm going to take it over to Darren wood after work today. They said they can read then for £35+vat so just going to go with that and see what they say.

No worries mate. The carly app is only £40 to buy yourself + an adapter and you can read fault codes as many times as you like then.

Yeah I should probably invest in one anyway. It's on the hit list.

Cheers
Yeah. I think you can actually scan codes for free a couple of times too which just means the initial investment is a dongle. I tried a cheap one which sadly doesn't work with carly so you might have to bite the bullet and buy the real one if that the route you go down.

Well worth it though best app I've used.

Darren and his team look after my car, thoroughly nice guys... And more importantly, incredibly knowledgeable.

They'll get you sorted.

Turns out it was the ignition coil. They managed to squeeze it in at Darren Wood the same day even thought they were fully booked - decent guys.

They just replaced the faulty one however, as I'm going to change the rest myself. I'm on euro car parts, what are peoples thoughts on the HAAS ones compared to the bosch ones?

Don't bother. The bosch ones are cheap enough.

By the way there's a few different part no's for the coils. Check real oem, try to get the latest and greatest. It will make a difference.
