can you play music apps such as spotify through the standard nav/radio or do you need to upgrade to pro nav/media package?

You may be able too, plug your iPhone in via a lightening cable into the USB slot and then select it in the multimedia menu on Idrive menu...

Then open Spotify on your phone and find out ... Mine works but I do have pro nav and extended Bluetooth.
