Hi there. First time poster, so - hi!

I had my 2019 M140i serviced at a BMW main dealer today which I've owned for about 10 months or so. They just made a passing comment about not being able to update the software on the car because it would risk overwriting the remap. Well I had no idea the car had a remap...

The dealership was about to close and the service advisor was over from the Mini branch so she wasn't really comfortable giving me much information. I would ideally just like to get the car back to a stock set up. Is this a simpler process than going stage 1 in the first place, and would I be better off going back to the main dealer or somewhere that does remaps?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Edit to add some detail: I have checked and the sports dials read 480hp and 640nm. I guess it's impossible to know for sure without a dyno, but to me it doesn't feel 400hp (or whatever a stage 1 tune would be). I have had a Cupra 300 before, for example, and I'd say the M140i feels faster, but not 100hp faster. It also is pretty civilised even when being pushed and I'd have expected 400hp and 600nm to be pretty lary. So not sure if it's even possible for it to have the stage 1 dials but still have stock power.

You could get it back to stock, your warranty is at risk now BMW know it’s been mapped .

I think if you take to any reputable mapper they can apply a standard map to it for a fee. I had MG Flasher on my X3 M40i (so B58 engine) and decided to use DMS ... the car is currently on the DMS map who will put it back to stock for nowt but ... if I just use the MG Flasher app it will overwrite whatever is there if I wish and I can select standard or their stage 1 should I wish. The process is easy and via my mobile phone and a wifi obd dongle. Loads of options if you wish ... remap company or the likes of MG Flasher, MHD or Bootmod 3. All good.

2019 out of warranty unless aftermarket /extended one ? Warranty gone once done as they can see even if removed. Gearbox torque / boost and other data which is used for research also shows info which exposes prev mapping / tuning boxes.

Thanks for the info. I was assuming any of the options to licence one of the tools myself would probably cost more than a one off flash from a professional. I guess that would make sense if I wanted to switch back from stock to stage 1 often though?

Also yes - car is well outside BMW warranty so no worries on that front. More that I have no need for more than the stock figures, and don't want to pay more on insurance and/or engine issues etc.

Right well I have spoken with a local tuner and he said for the age of BMW, he may have to take the ECU out even to flash it back to a stock map. This would run into several hundred pounds. He advised either keeping the map, or try going main dealer BMW...

FYI in case anyone in the future finds this thread... I have booked the car in with a BMW main dealer who are going to flash the car back to stock software. Think it was 2 hour's labour, which is £178 inc VAT. I am in contact with the dealer I bought the car off (a Ford main dealer) to see if they are willing to cover the cost.

That sounds reasonable ... but hopefully the dealer you bought off will pay for it.
