Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an M140i from a dealer (not main) with 37000 miles on the clock.

It has a full BMW service history on iDrive, the last service was done in May 2021 when it was at 34k miles - so not really "due" one yet, but I may get it booked in soon.

The car has been a blast, and I love it. The only thing I've noticed is, after giving it some hard throttle, I can smell a burning smell - I don't think it's oil but I can't be 100% sure.. the system says it still has about 75% oil left, which sounds about right for the mileage since the last change.

I can't figure out what it is, the only thing I've noticed is it's a lot stronger outside of the car.

Has anyone had something similar to this before? I might get the car checked by a BMW specialist garage (If anyone has anyone they recommend in the Surrey area, that would be nice!) and go back to the dealer if there is an actual issue?

Any tips on what to check for myself would be appreciated!

Many thanks!

With hard throttle comes hard braking, could it be the brakes? Otherwise, clutch?

I'd do a full service (as I'd recommend with any new-to-you vehicle) and see if the issue persists. If it does, take it to your trusted mechanic - or the dealer you purchased it from, as you prefer - having driven it in such a way that causes the smell to occur (so they can smell/acknowledge it).

i don’t think it’s the breaks, they can’t have gotten that hot to smell like that, it could be the clutch but how could I tell?

I think I’ll take it for a service, should I take it to BMW direct or will any independent garage do now it’s out of warranty?

Clutch and brake smells are very different from burning oil and very distinctive. Clutch is normally obvious as you can hear the effects of it slipping followed by the smell. I don't think it's likely to smell from normal gear changes.

A recent oil burning smell on my car was a minor seepage from the rocker cover but I only smelt that once stopped.

Check out BMS in Leatherhead.

As GeeDee says, smells are very different depending what it is, but brakes and clutch smells are quite putrid so easy to tell.

My car does give off some smells from the engine bay after a proper drive - mostly the heat from the turbo and surrounding parts, as the turbo is on the drivers side.

thinking back, I did a bit of spirited driving and had some similar smells, went away the next day, so I suspect brakes

Ah it could be the turbo, it is my first turbo car! I’ll get it checked out when I get it serviced.
Thanks for the responses everyone
