Hi all. Am weighing up the option of adding the m performance LSD to my M135i. I've got a good quote from Cotswold including fitting. I did consider the quaife option but don't like the thought of losing the old diff and also the m performance could be swapped out when trading the car in and should get some money back for it. It will also be included in the BMW warranty.

I've contacted the insurance company (Esure) and they tell me it is not classed as a chargeable modification which is great news.

So all is good to go. My question is, to anyone who has one already, does it improve traction in the wet or does esp still light up? Does it make a big difference to the handling? My main reason for getting one is improved traction in the wet and being able to apply a bit more power earlier in the corners. Going sideways may be a consideration in the future if I ever take it to a track day etc. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I have one, and it now drives how it always should have done. I'm sure it was developed with a Drexler, and then removed by Marketing to save costs or something.

The traction control depends on conditions, it certainly flickers up much less than it used to. Far more controllable in Sports+ / DSC off.

Yes, you can put the power down earlier, but it's more than that. It's better to drive everywhere, all the time. :)

LSD - even for road use - helps traction of a high powered SWB, RWD car. It just grips and goes.

I was very glad for mine when in mid Wales last weekend - 4 seasons in one day - single track lanes with 2 inches of snow too narrow for a gritting truck. Made worse as I had just sold my winter tyres so on MPSS. Drove to the conditions and the car got up/down some hilly routes wo issue.

Ok thanks that's good to know. Could you explain the 30% lockup on acceleration, 9% on deceleration and what that means? Does the m performance perform better than the quaife for road use or are they much the same? Thanks for your help.

I'm putting out 390ftlb of torque. With a 30% lock, the wheel with least traction should put out 117 ftlb (even with one wheel in the air), verses 0 ftlb with an open diff (where it just spins all the torque away). Most BMW LSD's were 25% historically, 30% is nice. :)

Quaife are very good too, even higher torque bias, and basically maintenance free. They're only minor downside is they're reactionary, where as the Drexler is pro-active (locking a little earlier - as soon as the torque is applied to the propshaft rather than waiting for a wheel to lose traction).

Ok so I have an LSD so wheres best to properly control the rear end via the throttle so to get some proper confidence in the car. We can all do a small drift and a wheelspin but I know very few who can do it properly.
Before you say a car park Im 48 so would look a bit of a tw*t skidding round Morrisons.
Im back on my euro drive in June in the Alps so preparation is needed. Not many tracks in the North offer tuition in your own car.

How are you finding your MP LSD Mike?

I haven't found any real downsides yet, other than the dollar.

Well, as you know it's a bit rubbish out there at the moment - so in terms of my daily grind:

Jumping out of junctions/roundabouts/etc is no longer is a kangaroo affair of managing the traction, you just hoof it and go.
Instances of snow/ice have been calmly dealt with, having 2WD instead of 1WD (for the most part). I have more grip everywhere.
I love the transition of it helping turn you into a bend, pivoting on the hips, and then that drive out being so satisfying.

Best of all, I like the fact arse angle is dictated by throttle position, and not my having to be 'rough' with weight transition to get it to move and then hold it.

I haven't had it on track yet, but (and I know it's frigging expensive) ...but, I've appreciated it enough already to be happy I spent the cash.

TRL was doing these for about £2450 a while back on his new builds, all in.

Probably worth giving Phil at Cotswolds a try too, they seem very reasonable for fitting most parts.
